Fucked up that Tarantino is famous for being the foot guy but he's just lazily shoehorning bare feet into scenes. Park Chan Wook is integrating his foot fetish into the plot like a real freak.
"We're all kinda awful so be less jusgemental," was pretty doctrine until Christianity turned it into "you're born sinful and should feel guilty all the time and also be super judgmental constantly."
So the anti bullying message of the show does nothing to improve how people treat you. Your bullies empathize with the protagonist and think the way they're treated is wrong, but they don't see you as that protagonist. You're the comic relief weirdo who even you don't relate to.
In almost every show or movie about a sympathetic nerdy protagonist who gets bullied, there's also a comic relief character who's the butt of all the jokes who the show has no sympathy for. You think you're the former, your bullies think your the latter.
Anyway the problem with dehumanizing your enemies isn't that you'll be too mean to them, but that you'll think they're being evil for the fun of it and don't have excuses and rationalizations. When you do the same evil you'll say "oh but I'm not like them, I have an excuse."
There's a difference between literally complex and morally complex. The Holocaust was literally complex, it had lots of moving parts, but not morally complex: the nazis were evil. The ongoing Nakba is literally complex but not morally; israel is and always has been evil.
Had Rick Riordan stopped after Percy Jackson and the Olympians, his achievements would have been immortal. Had he stopped after Heroes of Olympus, he would still have been a great man but flawed. But his latest book came out in 2025. Alas, what can one say?
suzanne collins getting cashgrab children’s author allegations for two prequels in 6 years while rick riordan still pumping out entire spinoff series omg you guys hate women
Crazy that the Austrian school is a thing that's taken seriously. Imagine if there was a major sect of doctors that were like "the human body is super complicated so we think trying to cure disease will make things worse," and they were like, the main doctors.
In the last six years on social media I've come to the conclusion that most people have no idea why they do the things they do and find the idea of thinking about it offensive.
You aren't immune to the emotional factors that make fascist institutions attractive. You're appalled by the reality of cops or celebrities or republicans but the values that create that reality are still appealing, so when the fantasy of an exception is presented you eat it up.
It's a big part of how they're rehabilitating George W Bush after his racist, murderous presidency. People buy it because they desperately cling to the fantasy of a "good" republican. The Rommel Myth was popular for so many decades for the same reason.
I think there's something in how much people love Uncle Iroh. People really want there to be a "good one." Yes the fire nation is bad but this guy is the good one. Oh I don't like celebrities but this one is the good one. Oh I hate cops expect for this good one.
"I used to think heroin addiction was bad but then I tried heroin and it turns out I can't get enough of the stuff so I guess I was wrong" what the hell are you talking about?
Also I think it's funny when someone is like "I was a snob about reality shows but then I started watching one and got addicted so I guess I was wrong," and it's like you watched the thing designed to be addicting and got addicted that doesn't prove your former criticism wrong.
Whenever I criticize a sacred cow of pop culture people are like "well that's part of my childhood" and I'm like but doesn't that disturb you a little? Don't you feel a little violated that a part of your personal identity is essentially a piece of marketing?
Going to the Pokémon store with my friends like an out of touch but supportive grandma. "Oh I like this red cat what's his name? Oh very cool. And this funny mouse? He seems nice."
Actually hate the trope of "aliens turn out to like earth pop culture." The point of sci-fi is to question the cultural norms we consider inherent and unquestionable. Using it to go "actually our specific cultural touchstones are universally, objectively good," seems antithetical
The media's obsession with serial killers is propaganda. If evil is the result of pathological antisocial deviance then the norm is good. If violence come from aberrations, then the norm, despite military worship, genocide, and colonialism, is nonviolent by default.
