𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐈𝐦ā𝐦 𝐀𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐟ī𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞? 🧵 The answer to this question is an emphatic -yes- and in this post, I will bring clear narrations transmitted by the Salaf and compile them to paint the full picture. First, we must establish that the Imām and his companions excommunicated the zanādiqah (heretics) and the Jahmiyyah as specific individuals—without “establishing the hujjah”—and not merely in a general sense: al-Fadl bin Ishāq ad-Dūrī said: “I heard al-Mu’ītī say: “We were in the presence of Yazīd bin Hārūn, and they mentioned al-Marīsī. He asked: ‘What does he say?’ They replied: ‘He says that the Qur’ān is created.’ So he said: ‘He is a disbeliever.’” An-Naqd ‘ala al-Marīsī p.26 al-Hasan bin Thawāb al-Mukharrimī reported: I said to Ahmad bin Hanbal: “(What do you say about) Ibn Abī Dāwūd?” He said: “A disbeliever in Allāh The Almighty.” Ahmad bin Muhammad bin ‘Abdullāh bin Sadaqah said: “I heard al-Maimūnī say: I said to Ahmad bin Hanbal: ‘Oh Abā ‘Abdillāh, when Ibn Tarrāh’s funeral was brought out, the children began shouting: ‘Write to Mālik (The Angel in charge of Hellfire’s gates): ‘the fuel of Hellfire has arrived!’’ He (Ahmad) then covered himself and said: ‘They shout, they shout.’” As-Sunnah by al-Khallāl 5/117-120 There are many more instances of these specific individual excommunications scattered throughout the books of the Sunnī creedal tradition, and I shall not prolong the main subject here, as many narrations of the Imām specifically excommunicating caliphs for their disbelief—due to adopting Jahmite stances—will be presented. Before we get to that, we must first understand what the Salaf meant when they called someone a zindīq (heretic), or what they intended when they said that ‘so-and-so has fallen into zandaqah (heresy). One of the very first Arabic lexicons, Kitāb al-‘Ayn by al-Farāhīdī, defines the word as follows: زندق: الزِّنديق ... زَنْدَقَةُ الزِّنديق: ألا يؤمن بالآخرة، وبالربوبية “..’Zandaqah of the zindīq’ means: that he does not believe in the Hereafter nor in Lordship” His excommunication of the heretical rulers al-Wāthiq, al-Ma’mūn, and al-Mu’tasim (before his repentance) When Caliph al-Mutawakkil arrived in Baghdād, a man wrote a note to him saying: “Oh Amīr al-Mu’minīn Ahmad bin Hanbal insults your forefathers and accuses them of heresy (zandaqah).” So al-Mutawakkil wrote in response: “As for al-Ma’mūn, he meddled and thus exposed himself to the people; as for my father al-Mu’tasim, he was a man of war and had no insight into kalām; as for my brother al-Wāthiq, he deserved what was said of him.” al-Bidāyah wa al-Nihāyah 14/419 Ahmad said regarding al-Ma’mūn: “May Allāh fight that wicked one! He deliberately altered the Book of Allāh — meaning he wrote instead of ‘the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing’ ‘the Gentle, the All-Aware.’” Tabaqāt al-Hanābilah 1/386 Now the question that needs be asked is that if someone changes one letter of the Qur’ān let alone entire words is he a believer or disbeliever? This is obviously a rhetorical question we both know the answer. Let’s continue: Ahmad bin al-Qāsim reported that he said to Abū ‘Abdullāh ash-Shāfi’ī: “Did he speak with you — meaning in the presence of al-Mu’tasim?” He replied: “May Allāh disgrace that one! I do not see him to be upon Islām.” As-Sunnah by al-Khallāl 5/120 Hanbal reported that Abū ‘Abdullāh said: “And what greater calamity was there than that which the enemy of Allāh and the enemy of Islām brought about — namely, the abolishment of the Sunnah” meaning the one who came before al-Mutawakkil (al-Wāthiq)—Then Caliph al-Mutawakkil revived the Sunnah. Ibn al-Mibrad said: al-Qādhi (Abu Ya’ala) inferred from his words that Ahmad considered him lacking uprightness, for he called him “enemy of Allah and enemy of Islām” and had he regarded him as a legitimate Imām, he would not have deemed it lawful to describe him so. Idāh Turuq al-Istiqāmah 1/61
