Everyone on my feed is saying the same two things right now. Tax the rich. There should be no billionaires. I kept hearing it so often that I decided to pull the actual numbers myself, straight from the Federal Reserve, and what I found is not what the loudest voices want you to believe. You can fact check every figure in this post, and I will tell you exactly where each one comes from, because I like to be data driven and you should be too. Total household net worth in the United States is about 183 trillion dollars. That comes from the Federal Reserve Z.1 Financial Accounts. Every American billionaire combined, all 989 of them on the 2026 Forbes list, holds about 8.4 trillion. The bottom 50 percent of Americans, roughly 170 million people, hold about 4.3 trillion according to the Federal Reserve Distributional Financial Accounts. Now do the math on what is left. The middle class, everyone between the bottom half and the billionaires, holds roughly 170 trillion dollars. That is 93 percent of all the wealth in America. Sit with that for a second, because it breaks the story you are being sold. If a tiny group at the top had truly taken everything, the middle would be empty. It is the opposite. The single biggest winner of American capitalism over the last half century was the middle class, because ordinary Americans were allowed to own things. Homes. 401k accounts. Index funds. Pieces of the businesses that drive this country. And here is the part that should end the confiscation argument on the spot. If you seized every dollar from every billionaire tomorrow, all 8.4 trillion, it would fund the federal government for a little over one year. One time. Then it is gone forever, along with the companies, the jobs, and the taxes those people would have paid every year after. It is also worth looking at how rare this is. Around 1990 about a dozen developed countries had wealth taxes. Today only a few remain, places like Norway, Spain and Switzerland, because nearly everyone else repealed them after they raised far less than promised and pushed capital out. France ran one for decades, watched tens of thousands of millionaires leave, and finally scrapped it in 2017. Even the countries Americans love to call socialist, like Sweden, have wealth concentration at the top that rivals or exceeds ours, and Sweden itself abandoned its wealth tax back in 2007. A middle class that owns 93 percent of the national balance sheet is not normal in this world. It is the exception, and it happened here, under capitalism. Now watch what is happening in real time in the two states leading the tax the rich movement. California has a proposed 5 percent tax on billionaire wealth headed toward the November ballot, and the residency cutoff was January 1 of this year. So what happened in December? Peter Thiel left for Florida. David Sacks left for Texas. Uber cofounder Travis Kalanick moved to Austin on December 18 and openly joked about the timing. Companies tied to Larry Page filed paperwork in Florida, and reporting has named Zuckerberg, Brin and Ellison among those making moves. This is on top of the wave that already happened. Elon Musk took Tesla and SpaceX to Texas. Oracle left. Charles Schwab left. Hewlett Packard Enterprise left. Chevron moved its headquarters to Houston after more than a century in California. Even In N Out, the most Californian brand in existence, is opening a huge eastern headquarters outside Nashville, and its owner has already moved her family to Tennessee. Since 2018, more than 100,000 millionaires have left California. New York is running the same experiment. The new mayor stood outside Ken Griffin's penthouse on Tax Day to announce a new annual tax on luxury second homes, and Griffin responded by saying Citadel will now add far more jobs in Miami as a direct consequence. The Citizens Budget Commission found New York's share of the nation's millionaires collapsed from 12.7 percent to 8.7 percent between 2010 and 2022, the largest decline of any state, and the lost tax revenue is estimated at roughly 11 billion dollars in a single year. More than 61,000 millionaires have left New York since 2018. The governor is now literally asking wealthy former residents in Palm Beach to please come home. To be fair, economists genuinely debate how big tax flight really is, and not every rich person leaves. But the revenue losses above are not projections. They already happened. Here is why every middle class person reading this should care. The top 1 percent pays nearly half of all income tax in California and more than 40 percent of income tax in New York City. When that base relocates to Texas and Florida, the spending promises do not leave with them. The bills remain, and there is only one place left to send them. You. The wealth tax that starts at a billion dollars becomes a proposal at 50 million, then 10 million, then it becomes higher property taxes, higher sales taxes and higher income taxes on teachers, nurses and engineers, because that is who is still standing there when the music stops. And then the pendulum swings violently the other way, voters revolt, and we oscillate between extremes instead of ever fixing the actual problem. Because there is a real problem, and this is where I want to take you from zero to hero. The bottom 50 percent holding only 4.3 trillion is a genuine failure. But it was not caused by billionaires existing. It was caused by policy, and the clearest example is Social Security. FDR signed it into law in 1935 as the retirement safety net for working Americans. From the very beginning, the law required the trust fund to invest in exactly one thing, United States Treasury securities. Not stocks. Not a piece of American business. Government IOUs. In 1983 Washington raised payroll taxes specifically to build up a surplus for the baby boomers, and every extra dollar of that surplus went into those same Treasuries, earning an average of roughly three and a half percent a year. Today the fund holds about 2.7 trillion dollars, and the government's own trustees project the reserves run dry in the early 2030s, after which incoming payroll taxes cover only about 80 percent of promised benefits. David Friedberg laid out the counterfactual on the Sorcery podcast, and it is the most painful statistic I have seen all year. Had those same surplus dollars been invested in the S&P 500 since the early 1980s, his estimate is that the trust fund would hold an extra 37 trillion dollars today. Cut that number in half to be conservative and it is still one of the largest wealth transfers away from working people in human history. The bottom half of America was forced by law to lend its retirement savings to politicians at three and a half percent while everyone with a 401k bought equities and compounded at roughly ten. The middle class got to own America. The bottom half was handed an IOU. That gap you see in my chart was not built by Bezos or Musk. It was built by lawmakers, most of whom have never run a business, never managed capital, and never faced a single consequence for the trillions their rules quietly destroyed. We cannot go back to 1982 and buy the index for the trust fund. That money is gone. But imagine the post someone writes 30 or 40 years from now if we get this moment wrong too. Imagine them explaining how the capital fled, how the middle class got handed the bill, and how a generation was taught to resent ownership instead of being handed the tools to achieve it. The answer to too few people owning assets has never been making sure nobody does. It is giving every American, starting at birth, an account that owns a piece of this country's growth, the same way the middle class quietly built 170 trillion dollars of wealth over the last 50 years. Every number here is verifiable. Federal Reserve Z.1 Financial Accounts. Federal Reserve Distributional Financial Accounts. The 2026 Forbes billionaires list. The Citizens Budget Commission of New York. The Social Security trustees reports. And the David Friedberg interview on the Sorcery podcast that inspired me to check the math in the first place.
