I'm sympathic to some sub-arguments she makes here, but the thread is just a mess with some really weird comparisons As if a cure for cancer or running water is suddenly evil when it's built under capitalism. Leftists can do much better imo

I see this argument all the time from tech people: Building gargantuan AI models may be computationally, environmentally, and financially costly. But if those models then go on to solve cancer, isn't that on balance better for the world? NOOOO. A thread.

@TylerAlterman @SamoBurja I think the High Stakes Worldview is the right take: standard futures assume a future roughly like the present + trends, while the HSW thinks there are heavy positive and negative tails: more probability and more extreme extreme events. The future is likely to be *different*.

There's now a full fabric PRC flag planted on the surface of the Moon after it was deployed from one side of Chang'e 5's descent stage just before ascent stage's launch. Whatever your opinions on the PRC are, this photo definitely has significant meanings in spaceflight history.

When living through a public health disaster, it is worth remembering successes. Here’s a big one: Dr. Crowlie, a doc from Michigan, convinced Morton Salt to add iodine to salt in 1924. Due to this move, average IQ went up 15 points across much of the US! Income went up by 11%!
