Burnout gets all the blame when volunteers quit. But most of the time, that's not what actually happened. They just stopped feeling like part of something and started feeling like they were filling a slot. So they faded. Quietly. No big exit. Just empty chairs. It doesn't look like conflict when it's happening. It looks like slower replies to the group text. Showing up ten minutes later each week. Saying yes to less. By the time someone finally tells you they're stepping back, the real departure happened months earlier, in their head. A slot can be filled by anyone. A role that makes someone feel like part of something can't be, and people notice the difference immediately.

@churchtalkative This is the other side of “leading volunteers like Jesus.” He invested, modeled, then released—he didn’t just keep adding to the rota. When the pipeline is only “who can we schedule this week,” people get used up. Healthy churches need both the yes and the rest.
This is the healthier picture. Membership that actually means something requires both belonging and the willingness to speak truth in love. The practical challenge is seeing who’s still below any real friendship or accountability threshold before they quietly drift. That’s the work we’re trying to support.
Yes. The quiet danger is when someone is faithfully “showing up” but still has almost no one who would actually miss them. That’s the gap between involvement and being held. We’re trying to help shepherds see the shape of connection around each person, not just the check-in number.
