Retail investor option market activity is skyrocketing.

To put this into perspective, SpaceX's 3-day retail purchases roughly matched the combined total of Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, the S&P 500 ETF, $SPY, and the Nasdaq 100 ETF, $QQQ. Furthermore, Charles Schwab recorded one of its 5 busiest trading days in the company's 55-year history on the day of SpaceX's debut, fielding ~140,000 client calls related to the listing. Meanwhile, retail demand for other stocks remained historically weak, with last week marking the lowest weekly retail single-stock purchases since March 2020, even including SpaceX. Despite the buying frenzy, SpaceX shares have fallen for 2 consecutive sessions, dropping as much as -10% on Thursday before closing down -3.6% at $185.00. The stock is now -3% below its first-day closing price and -18% below its intraday peak on Tuesday. The retail mania around SpaceX remains unlike anything seen before.
