GOD BLESS AMERICA> The first public performance of "God Bless America" was on November 10, 1938, when Kate Smith sang it on her CBS radio show, The Kate Smith Hour. Irving Berlin originally wrote the song in 1918 while serving in the U.S. Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York, during World War I. He intended it for his soldier revue Yip Yip Yaphank, but set it aside because he felt it didn’t fit. The early version had more militaristic lyrics (e.g., “Make her victorious on land and foam”). In 1938, with rising tensions in Europe (including the recent Munich Agreement and Kristallnacht), Berlin revised the lyrics to make it a song of peace and patriotism rather than war. He added the well-known introductory verse: “While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free…” Kate Smith’s manager, Ted Collins, asked Berlin for a patriotic song for her show around the 20th anniversary of Armistice Day (November 11). Berlin gave her the revised version. Smith premiered it near the end of her live national radio broadcast on November 10, 1938 (the eve of Armistice Day), introducing it as a brand-new song written especially for her by Berlin. Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend
