In older railway systems using plain nuts and bolts on fishplates, vibration from trains commonly causes progressive loosening. Cyclic loading overcomes friction, allowing nuts to gradually back off and reduce clamping force — exactly the risk seen in the video. Modern solutions largely prevent this: Prevailing-torque locknuts (nyloc or all-metal types) Double-nut or castle-nut arrangements with split pins Locking washers (Nord-Lock, spring washers) Lock-wheel-nut style fasteners with secondary locking or serrated faces Elastic rail clips (Pandrol, Vossloh etc.) on continuously welded rail, which avoid traditional threaded fasteners altogether These designs, plus regular inspections, have greatly reduced the classic “nuts working loose under traffic” problem.
