There is accumulating evidence (including by our colleagues at @YaleClimateComm) that better communicating the existence of scientific consensus can shift non-scientists towards believing the science (h/t @DG_Rand), e.g.:
journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00…
A potential solution: expert survey panels that aggregate confidence-weighted scientific opinions on emerging issues, allowing non-scientists to see areas of scientific consensus, division, and uncertainty.
E.g. the economics panels from @ChicagoBooth:

One problem we tried to solve: even when there is a high degree of scientific consensus, media outlets may elevate voices that lie far outside the scientific mainstream.
How can we help non-scientists distinguish between consensus science and fringe science?
Today on The Gist. Economics Professor @jenniferdoleac joins Mike to talk about what we know works and the bad ideas that persist in combatting crime. Plus, the Discord Leaks aren't that leaky. And many Mayoral results. open.spotify.com/episode/2CKM5v…
Panelists' comments provide explanations, caveats, & other insights that may be helpful to policymakers. You can find their full responses below the graphs on this page:

Moving marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a less-restrictive schedule or legalizing it at the federal level would have meaningful social benefits that exceed any social costs.
