Something that really frustrated me about this show is they made small changes to real history for seemingly no reason. The timeline is consistently wrong, the show says this helicopter crash happened in April and the crash was from radiation. This is entirely wrong. Yes a helicopter did crash while performing air drops to cover the reactor. It wasn't because they flew into the smoke but because it flew into a crane line. This happened 5 months after the explosion. They create characters like is Ulana Khomyuk instead of giving credit to the actual USSR scientists that worked on the cleanup. The characterization of Valery Legasov is entirely incorrect. He wasn't some naive outsider but was a career partyman himself. The show also claims that Valery died on April 26th, 2 years after the explosion when he actually died April 27th, the following day. These dramatizations can be fine but the writers INTENTIONALLY mix in footage of the real people and events to give themselves an air of legitimacy when they significantly change the dates and facts. For most young people, this show is the first time they learned anything about Chernobyl besides "nuclear power can go boom and be bad" and much of it is intentionally incorrect for no justifiable reason.
What makes the Chernobyl helicopter crash so terrifying is how cold it is. No music swell or dramatic speeches. Just Stellan Skarsgård and Jared Harris (65 today) staring in silence as it unfolds "The only thing was, don't react too much. That was the only thing we thought about"

Yep, that's me. Not to sound like a "know it all boomer" but... Zero, and I did 1,000 miles with the rear brakes shattered. A couple notes on this crash: That was a low mileage... I think dealer owned... vehicle with very old tires. The driver was screwed from the start. The viper has to be driven with precision inputs (fully analog car), so it needs to be driven at 9 and 3, not one hand on top. One-arming increases the risk of overcorrection The second mistake was shifting & accelerating without his head being forward. The viper requires continuous attention when accelerating, you can't have your eye off the ball safely. The pattern that I use is look -> shift -> accelerate -> merge. While you can keep your head on a swivel in other cars, you're committed once you get on the throttle, so your eyes need to be forward, and your hand needs to go from the shifter directly back to the wheel. The Viper does an incredible job of teaching professional driving techniques in a violent manner.
