This conclusion has more been derived from reading dozens of books on history and philosophy and seeing what happens when people try to naively modify complex systems. Most notably is probably the communists 19th/20th century communists who were really confident about their proto-systems-dynamics understanding and then accidentally killed over 100 million people. The best direct counter to Meadows. Based on experiments where people manage simulated complex systems (a town, an ecosystem) and consistently fail by intervening confidently without understanding feedback delays and side effects. Reads almost like a rebuttal to “go mess with systems.” •“The Systems Bible” (aka Systemantics) – John Gall. Written by a systems theorist who’s more cynical than Meadows. Core thesis: complex systems usually fail when you try to fix them, and working systems evolved from simpler working systems — you can’t just design one from scratch.
