This is what I was waiting for, the application of a 1-3-3-3 structure during the final-phase of possession play (can also be called a disjointed 1-3-6). The advantage of this structure is that it helps in creating overloads (especially against a back-5) while also allowing players to exploit the half-spaces. Counter-pressing becomes much more efficient if all the three lines occupy varied vertical channels, which is something Spain are trying to do. Next the sweeper at the back, good to see Laporte in there for two reasons: quick recycling of the ball and Uruguay don't have a genuine pacy dribbler in their squad. These overloads created plus the rashness displayed by the Uruguay players, both are technically favouring Spain.

Good decision from Deschamps to give Olise the freedom to drop deeper and help organize play. I think he has the qualities to excel in that role. At Bayern, we don't see him do it as much because with Kimmich dictating the tempo and Kane often dropping in to link play, there's less need for Olise to take on those responsibilities. France plays with Tchouameni and Rabiot in deep midfield so it makes more sense. On the other hand, I'm not convinced by Dembélé in that role. Giving him freedom to roam suits his game, but it's more effective when he's operating higher up the pitch. Basically because he’s too unpredictable and can leave you exposed in defensive transitions. When it comes to organizing play from deeper midfield areas, Olise is simply more reliable. His decision-making, composure, and passing range make him better suited to that responsibility than Dembélé.
