When I was Muslim, I knew the story in Surah 2. King Saul leads his army out, God tests them at a river — don’t drink, or you’re not with me — and only a few pass. Then they fight, and David kills Goliath. Surah 2:249-251. Clean story. Until you open the Bible and find that the river test isn’t Saul’s at all. It’s Gideon’s. Judges 7. God tells Gideon his army is too big. So he tests them at the water. The men who lap like a dog go one way, the men who kneel go another. God whittles 32,000 men down to 300, so Israel can’t brag that they won by their own strength. That’s the test. And it belongs to GIDEON. A judge. About 150 years BEFORE Saul was ever king. You know what shook me? The Quran took Gideon’s water test, pinned it on Saul, and then stitched the David and Goliath battle onto the end of it. Two separate stories, from two different centuries, fused into one. It’s the exact same thing the Quran does with Moses and Jacob. Take a detail from one hero, glue it onto another, compress the timeline. I used to say the Bible mixed things up. But the Bible keeps Gideon and Saul as two distinct men, 150 years apart, with two distinct stories. It’s the later book that merged them. And here’s what I couldn’t ignore. Gideon’s 300 won so that no one could boast. The whole point was: the victory is God’s, not yours. That’s the Gospel in advance. You don’t win by your strength. You win by His. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord.” Zechariah 4:6. The Bible kept the story straight because the story was going somewhere. It was going to a cross, where God won the victory alone, so no one could ever boast they saved themselves.

John Lennon wrote a beautiful song about socialism. “Imagine no possessions” he told us. He also: – helped write his band’s anti-tax anthem, Taxman – incorporated his IP holdings – moved to a lower-tax country – fiercely protected his royalties - drove two Rolls Royce’s and had multiple luxury homes. – made sure even the royalty cheques for Imagine were kept safe for his estate so his family would remain wealthy in perpetuity. If he believed it, he’d have lived it. The trouble with socialism is that even the people who love the idea won’t run the experiment on themselves. John Lennon writing Imagine while owning two Rolls Royce Phantoms and later having a law suit to protect his royalties tells you all you need to know about socialism in practice. It doesn’t work outside of the imagination.

We learned that sex makes babies when we were in middle school. If you don’t want to have a baby, don’t have sex with someone. You have no right to kill an innocent child who’s the result of your own decisions. Every child has the right to life.

Anyone who claims the lack of joy about the 250th is a function of a rough economy was not alive in 1976. The country rocked in its 200th celebration and the economy was a FREAKING MESS. There is this Gen Z misconception that the '70s and early '80s were some sort of economic golden age of readily available, well-paying jobs, low cost housing and an all around sense of prosperity. WRONG. Google "Stagflation." Google "gas lines." Google "mortgage interest rates in the 1980s." Our economy today is a golden age by comparison, without exaggeration. Yet somehow in 1976 we could gleefully celebrate our nation's birthday without Democrats turning it into a Howard Zinn-inspired anti-history hatefest.
