Please ask Jeff Leiper why he voted to raise DCs, voted against cutting them even when fully funded by other levels of government, voted against thousands of units in his own ward, voted against hundreds of units at Lansdowne that would have made the project financially viable, and voted against urban boundary expansion.
We don’t need a NIMBY mayor.
Unsurprisingly Jeff Leiper opposed this plan to cut development charges, claiming cutting DCs will do nothing to get more housing built or make it more affordable.
It’s shocking that after four years as chair of the planning and housing committee he still lacks even a basic understanding of housing economics.
But of course, he’s made his entire career out of standing with arms crossed in front of housing developments and bolstering NIMBY voices in his ward.
To say his mayoral campaign has been an incredible disappointment would be an understatement.
I have spent most of the past four years heavily criticizing Mark Sutcliffe but it has become clear to me that his primary mistake on housing was putting Jeff Leiper in a position of power on council and trusting him.
If the next election is a choice between these two, pro-housing voices should 100% choose Mark Sutcliffe. Jeff Leiper’s housing policies are incredibly reckless and would be enormously damaging to our city.
For too long, building a home in Ottawa has been too expensive and bogged down by too much process and red tape. We're finally changing that, and saying YES to housing. Today, city council approved a plan to cut development charges by 54%, reducing the cost of a typical new home
@_MarkSutcliffe Well done @_MarkSutcliffe — I’ve been one of your harshest critics in the past but this and the new zoning bylaw are two huge wins for Ottawa.
Thank you for your hard work getting this done!
For too long, building a home in Ottawa has been too expensive and bogged down by too much process and red tape. We're finally changing that, and saying YES to housing. Today, city council approved a plan to cut development charges by 54%, reducing the cost of a typical new home in the suburbs by $34,000.
In return, we're receiving almost $700 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments to pay for critical infrastructure, including widening Brian Coburn Boulevard and Carp Road, and realigning Greenbank.
Let's keep making it easier and cheaper to build homes, and let's keep fighting for more infrastructure money from other levels of government.
@_MarkSutcliffe This is fantastic news for the city — a huge step in the right direction.
It’s amazing what can happen in a couple of years… certain councillors swore that development charges had no impact on housing costs as they raised DCs by 40~% and cratered our home building industry.
@ShawnMenard1 100% correct.
The story I've heard from the public servants I've talked to:
Parking rates have skyrocketed. Traffic/transit are brutal. And government offices are poorly maintained, full of bed bugs, and generally disgusting.
Imagine your big contribution to society is screaming at one of Canada's most successful entrepreneurs... at a talk about entrepreneurship... with his parents in the front row. Peak loser energy.
Standing strong with @harleyf . The room booed the hate out the door, and he got right back to building. That's the Canada we should be rooting for.
What happened at @startupfest yesterday was antisemitism. Pure & simple. Disguised under a thin veil of advocacy, and everyone in the room saw right through it.
I was on stage with Georges St-Pierre talking about entrepreneurship. Not politics. A man burst in screaming horrible
@LeslynLewis It's a great investment in Alberta, and is squarely in their jurisdiction. We have some of the best minds on grid management and capacity in the country. I'm sure any of our colleagues in the provincial government will be happy to sit down with you and walk through the project.
@TheresaLubowitz@tylermeredith I was going to make a joke about the Navdeep Bains section being completely blank but there it is. It actually is in fact completely blank.
I have my Umbro Canada jersey from the 2010s that I still wear and love. Adidas jerseys are great too.
But overall I would just love to see a more patriotic art direction for the jerseys. I think most agree the black jerseys look really nice, but they don't scream Canada.
The best soccer nations have iconic kits that rarely change and are instantly recognizable. I'd love for us to have kits that reflect our national pride with that kind of of continuity.
My FIFA/Olympics hot take:
Can we stop giving Canada black uniforms/off-brand kits?
Our colours are red and white.
We should be proud enough of our country to wear our colours.
The black kits do look nice. I understand having an alt kit. But there wasn't a single game we needed it this tournament.
All our fans are in red. Every bar in the country packed in red. Everyone sitting at home watching, dressed in red.
Wish our team matched.
Was inspired for this post by the incredible Norway kits.
Honoured to continue serving as the Conservative shadow minister for housing.
Affordability is job one for our Conservative team. That means restoring the Canadian dream of homeownership.
We will fight for a generation left behind by reckless Liberal housing and immigration policies.
We will fight for the seniors who want to be able to retire in the communities they’ve lived their whole life.
And we will fight to make sure every Canadian has the opportunity to build a life, own a home, and live in a safe community.
