Thats what is being talked about. Scouts being scouts isnt considered analytics in this regard. Hiring an econ major to tell baseball players what to do is. There are whole analytics departments. My point being, the Dodgers are good for quite a few more reasons than just analytics

@EliotJurgensen @woopiggaming Analytics, in the definition most commonly used today, deal with spreadsheets. There are plenty of scouts that don't agree with the analytical model of baseball.

@EliotJurgensen @woopiggaming The Dodgers have the resources to have a department for everything. You can't credit their success to just analytics. Player development, advanced scouting, amateur scouting and experience are all things they have in spades.

Nolan Ryan, Cy Young and Steve Carlton would have been every bit as good now as they were then. Not to mention hitters back then having to worry about head-hunting pitchers and league specific strike zones. Its a slippery slope to assume games and gamers are played better with time. The game has changed but not always for the better.

Hard to explain what I'm about to say so I'll be careful with my words. Throwing harder often means its easier to see. High velos tends to be a result of proper sequencing and utilization of the levers, which often hurt deception of the release point. Some guys threw 89 and it looked like 98 and some guys threw 95 and it looked like 90. That being said, incentives have changed the game. Batting average, RBI, runs scored, and strikeouts aren't viewed as important as they used to be (for some reason), so hitters are hard to gauge against previous generations where those were THE metrics.

Was giving a lesson so I missed the back and forth while it was live. But I will say that once the game starts, there should be more of a focus on that game's happenings, which is tough to do when everyone is looking at tablets. The game tells you its secrets if you pay attention. As I stated before, pitch tendencies and heat maps are great for context and preparation. Lets the hitter formulate an approach that is likely to succeed. But when it starts tinkering with swing plane and path, its crossing a line that makes the hitter less adaptable.

What makes you say that modern pitching is better? Hitters and pitchers have always been fairly evenly matched. Yes there are great talents like Verlander, Nolan Ryan and Cy Young that dominated. But there are plenty of pitchers make mistakes and serve it up consistently. This whole conversation comes down to what you think hitting is. Having an approach that makes it easier for the hitter to execute and win the situation is what great hitters do. But if you adhere to the belief that hitting is highly dependent on mechanics and path, you'll tinker at every thing.

@Matt_Levine_1 @MattFritz1307 Hitters have always done that. But at some point, there's too much information and it complicates things. The issue some have with analytics in hitting is trying to find the 'optimum' swing or mechanics. Bc again, this depends on the pitch.

Guys are stronger with better physical training, but that doesn't make them more talented. Does a golfer that can hit his driver and irons further make him more talented? The other things make the ballplayer talented, imo. But I do see what you're saying. The body needs to rest, especially with the amount of strength training that is done now.

@JohnGorlewski @Seth_3773 Agreed. But most cycles I've seen have been legit. Stretching a single to a hustle double, when everyone in the stadium knows he needs a double. Or Arenado's walkoff homerun to hit for the cycle. They add drama to offense.

All of those things aren't hits though, so not so random. Arguably, hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports . Not to mention, if you hit get 2 hits early in the game, you're seeing the ball really well, so the opponent will likely change how they pitch you. It's not awesome only bc it's rare. It's awesome bc for the player it'll never be forgotten.
