Reflections on Agomma 1. I woke up this morning and watched Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde recount that incident, watched her body language, and somehow it troubled me even more the second time. 2. For years, many Igbo audiences watched Omotola @Realomosexy play Igbo characters. 3. She was our Agomma. 4. Did she pronounce every Igbo word perfectly? Of course not. 5. Sometimes the accent wandered far away from anything related to the Igbos, crossed several borders and never landed as anything we could recognise. But nobody cared. 6. We understood what she was trying to do. We embraced her effort. We loved the actress, celebrated the character and allowed art to remain art. 7. That is why her own account of what happened on an American production feels so uncomfortable. 8. As Omotola narrated it, an Igbo woman had been given a role requiring her to speak a language she apparently did not pronounce convincingly enough. 9. Omotola noticed it. Fair enough. 10. But instead of approaching this fellow Nigerian and saying, “Come, let me help you with this or get the Egun speaking lady to help you,” she reportedly approached the person in charge and suggested that the woman should perhaps be moved from that role. 11. Think about that slowly. 12. Two Nigerians meet in a foreign industry. 13. One notices the other struggling. 14. There are two doors before her: help her improve, or quietly raise the matter with management. 15. She chose the second door. 16. And when the supervisor reportedly responded, “I don’t care,” Omotola was offended by the response. 17. Yet perhaps the supervisor understood something deeper: actors perform outside their natural languages all the time. 18. We watch Americans attempt African accents, Africans speak French, British actors perform in Italian, musicians sing in languages they barely speak. 19. Is every pronunciation perfect? No. 20. Is communication still possible? Absolutely. 21. There were subtitles. There were rehearsals. There were breaks. There were people who could have helped. 22. What makes the story particularly disturbing is that Omotola appears to have carried the incident for years as something unfair that happened to her, without apparently recognising how the woman whose position she questioned might have experienced it. 23. That is the part worth reflecting on. 24. Sometimes a confession does not arrive in a courtroom. 25. Sometimes nobody interrogates you. Nobody accuses you. You simply tell a story believing you are the injured party, and somewhere in the telling, your audience sees something entirely different. 26. For many Igbo people, Omotola was never required to become Igbo before we embraced her. 27. We loved our Agomma despite imperfect pronunciation because belonging does not always demand perfection. 28. So it is painful to hear that our Agomma, when presented with another Nigerian woman struggling abroad, apparently reached first for escalation rather than solidarity. 29. Perhaps the greatest lesson here is simple: when you meet your compatriot struggling in a foreign land, your first instinct should not be, “Who can replace her?” 30. It should be, “How can I help her succeed?”

When people talk about politics and elections as if it's Chelsea vs Arsenal, these are the results. Elections have real life consequences. In 2001, in Abuja, African heads of state came to the honest conclusion that if they wanted quality healthcare for their people, they would need to put aside 15% of their annual budgets for health sector. After the "Abuja Declaration", health workers we're so excited about the good things to come. For context, the UK spends 38%, the US-26%, Saudi spends about 20%. Guess what Nigeria budgeted on healthcare in 2025? A measly 5%. Like our leaders agreed that 15% was needed and decided the lives of Nigerians were not so important and implemented 5% instead. How will there be bed spaces? There are about 79 federal tertiary hospitals, if you add state hospitals, there are about 120 tertiary hospitals catering for 200 million people. The health workers we're are complaining about their attitudes are stretched to the limit and are barely standing. A nurse who is ideally supposed to nurse 4-6 patients, is put in charge of 15-20 patients, all while earning less than N200k. If they attends to each patient the way they ideally should, they cannot possibly cater to all the patients under them. They don't have the allowance of time to be patient or polite as you'd want them to be. The same nurse switches to a private hospital or goes abroad and becomes the sweetest soul because they aren't under the pressure cooker that is the average Nigerian public hospital. About 60 thousand doctors are currently serving a population of 200million. If that doesn't make you worried, I don't know what will. Doctors are grossly overworked and underpaid as well. I did 5 surgeries in a 24hr span during my last call, and I promise you I didn't feel like being polite or empathetic at the end of the 5th surgery because I was feeling like collapsing myself. This is my 5th year of residency and I've been on annual leave once, 3 years ago. Health workers are running on fumes and deserve credit for just showing up instead of running away to better climes. Meanwhile the over 200 million Nigerians whose lives have literally been endangered by our leaders prefer to assault health care workers after a loss due to systemic failures rather than channel that rage against their wicked leaders. Your fellow celebrities, who themselves have witnessed firsthand the dysfunction of Nigerian healthcare will still come out to endorse the same people who are stealing the resources that are supposed to cater for the health of all Nigerians. You will probably also endorse APC too, should the opportunity arise. Finally, Paraphrasing @Wizarab10 , we all get the love (or leaders) we think we deserve.

Medical elders, can we pls stop "medical rerouting" postings for NYSC corp doctors. If you need a doctor to cover your facility for 24hrs pls employ a full time doctor, stop going after the vulnerability of doctors during NYSC. How do you want someone to cover your hospital for 24hrs almost everyday of the week and offer them 100k? The person said he can't and you started shouting, that the person is rude, that is not the training. NYSC was created for national integration not for cheap labour/slavery.

Nobody is wired to disrespect you because you are broke. You believing it is what makes you foolish. Everybody knows what they are doing. Don't you know the population of poor people in this country and the number of married ones among them? Why is it your own that is "wired" to be disrespectful? You can use wiring to defend and encourage anything - cheating, polygamy, violence, indifference, stonewalling, abuse, irresponsibility. Nobody is wired to do shit. Sorry about your experience, but there's something funny about these incessant complaints from Nigerians regarding the condition of their “Uber” rides, and their habit of pretending not to know where the problem lies. You see, when they are ordering these rides, they will see options of comfort & and above, whose cars are in significantly better condition, they would totally ignore those and go for the cheaper options. I mean, I don't blame them for going for cheaper options, as the economy is obviously biting everyone. But the problem I have with them is that they never stop one day to think, perhaps this is a function of the economy, and no matter how many times you run to X to complain about this, the situation will never change until your economy significantly improves. You must think that InDrive isn't aware of the condition of those cars. There's a reason those cars will continue to operate on those platforms no matter how many times you complain, until they eventually decide to pull the plug on the business. InDrive knows it can't charge higher than those rates, otherwise, their market size shrinks further. The drivers simply can't maintain those cars to your taste with those fares. If you own a car whose engine runs for at least 12 hours non-stop every day, one visit to the mechanic will tell you everything you need to know about what I am saying. For those saying they usually call to confirm the condition of the car, lol, you are not in a hurry or your destination is not important to you. How many will you cancel? It is your economy, folks. These complaints have been going on since 2016, nothing has changed. In fact, it keeps getting worse, as your economy continues to tank. It's time you began confronting your problems a little differently. You can't keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Fix your economy. They will argue under this post, but still come back here to complain about the same problem tomorrow. One day sha, we will learn how to address problems at their roots in this country. Until that day, let’s keep blaming each other.
