JD Vance points out an important observation I agree with in his new book Communion. When it comes to young adults raised in the church losing their faith, we often hear explanations like college indoctrination and being ill prepared for objections as possible explanations, but these are often oversimplified, overthought, or completely missing the point. Yes, these things do happen to some people, but the biggest thing Vance points out is that it has more to do with the trust you put in the environment you’re in than the pushback from non-Christians. It’s not that most people walk away from Christianity due to their exposure to secularism. Most people walk away because they enter an environment where Christianity feels irrelevant to their lives. If their friends and social circles don’t care, most people won’t either. Solid discipleship in the Church is important, but making sure young people are equipped to seek out friends and social environments where their faith won’t feel like an afterthought is equally as important. As in the words of Paul, “Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”” I Corinthians 15:33

There is an interesting overlap in people who want to distance the church from politics and those who want to bomb foreign countries to the Stone Age.

Banning SROs was never about the poorest among us having safe, livable conditions. It was about making sure the poorest among us didn’t live nearby. So a person that could once afford a SRO is now living in their car or some other materially less safe conditions.

in 1950 you could rent a room with no kitchen for cheap and eat at the diner downstairs. we banned the room, banned the SRO, required a full kitchen in every unit, and now people pay $2400 for the kitchen and doordash anyway. everyone is paying for a stove nobody touches

It’s sad we lost Davy Crockett to Texas, because he was the only Tennessee hero to have taken part in the exploration and settlement of all three Grand Divisions. And to be honest, between him and Old Hickory, Crockett was the better man.

Running for the exits when things get difficult, then coming back as they start to improve only to betray the friends you left behind to take on the fight in your absence. They call this the Benedict Arnold Option.

The relative value of a man being home with his family waxes and wanes depending on what’s happening. I value family time highly but if I’m home every night for two weeks straight and all weekend the value of being home for that third week is lower than if I had been on the road for a month. If I’ve been gone for most of each week for a month, being home for a couple weekends has exceptional value. Last thing I would say is that most value for fathers is doing things outside a routine. Teaching something new, going on an adventure, being there for a big game, etc. I don’t think there’s a single answer to what % home vs gone is right - it will necessarily change and be in tension with other necessary commitments.

I said that a revived Christianity WILL regard the Constitution as heretical and WILL want to trash it. This is a prediction; it's "will," and not "ought to". And the reason that my prediction WILL come true is that people like Joel Berry use the Constitution as an idol to block the absolutely NECESSARY task of using state power to enforce proper religious indoctrination on the population. No institutions are religiously neutral; everyone knows that our government will have a religious perspective and use this perspective in its education system. Yet every attempt to use this power directly is blocked by conservatives, appealing to "the Constitution". Regardless of whether the Constitution has become an actual idol for conservatives, it's functionally working like an idol for conservatives.

One thing I have often been thinking about lately is how, Even though I am often not good to God, God is always, unfailingly good to me. It's one of the most striking differences about the God of the Bible from all the other gods in history. In the ancient world, if you were not good to the gods... the gods would not be good to you. They were petty, vindictive, grudge bearing. Just read the Odyssey, or Aeneid, or any other work. "Muse, tell me, what slight to the Queen of the gods’ divinity, what offence that she felt, were her reasons for making a man so outstanding for piety suffer so great a cycle of disasters and face such great labours? Is there so much anger in the minds of the Gods? " And even if you did the right things, they may still do you wrong. Or some other god who was stronger, smarter, or just more present and willing would and could. But the God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ do good to use "while we were still sinners" and while we still continue to sin. He's compassionate and merciful, knowing that "our frame is but dust." We are "the apple of His eye." He "sings over us" like a Father humming a joyful tune while He watches His children play in the yard on a perfect Spring day. And He continues to do good to us every moment of every day of this life and then throughout all eternity hereafter.
