No team has maximized players defensively like Mark & the Thunder have JDub was completely raw on defense early in his career & they got him and his tools all the way to become an All Defensive player Isaiah Joe & Jared McCain couldn’t play at all with Philly due to his defense Ajay Mitchell was a pretty limited defender who’s now clearly a positive OKC will find ways to get someone as smart as Stirtz to blend in under this infrastructure
7’3 player with good feel & great shot blocking instincts is impossible to pass on at the end of the day
I think you’re going to see JDub transition even more into the off ball wing/transition role too OKC liked using Ajay as the primary ball handler in those units & I’m sure they will plan to use Stirtz a lot too in similar situations. Lots of lineups where OKC will have 2-3 true ball handlers on the floor, insane amounts of offensive talent that OKC couldn’t put on the floor a year or 2 ago
OKC has always believed in defense in terms of a full team economy over individual size which is why they consistently fade wings IMO You invest in guys like Cason, Chet, Dub (Mara) to floor raise your defense individually so you can create an ecosystem where players like Ajay/Stirtz/McCain/Shai can be maximized on that end OKC leaned more on perimeter defense in the past, but they’ll likely lean to more rim protection & better shooting going forward

I would try to get Justin Champagne in a deal where you move Dort/Joe still Would like one rebounding non-big on the team & both those guys make sense for Washington

If I had to guess, the Thunder pay Hartenstein on a cheaper 2-3 year deal From there, they reassess next offseason if they should trade him. It allows OKC to contend next year at it’s fullest & also keeps him as an asset next year
OKC got 2 of the most productive players in all of college, both on completely opposite spectrums I’m really happy with that draft, I wanted two prospects all along & they got a player in my top-10 & another guard The board didn’t fall great at 12 & OKC still comes away with questions at the “4” But their will be a time & place for everything. This was time to accumulate good basketball players.
