I keep seeing posts about tears and it reminded me of a book that I was referred to by a friend. WHAT IF YOUR TEARS CARRY THE REMEDY? Have you ever wondered why we cry? Not simply why am I sad? But why does the body produce tears when something deeply emotional moves through us? Years ago, I came across a fascinating book by Peter Van Oosterum titled Tears: A Key to the Remedy. His premise was unconventional: What if the tears produced by an emotional experience could themselves be used as a homeopathic remedy for the condition that produced them? Van Oosterum proposed taking a person's own tears and preparing them as a highly diluted homeopathic preparation. His reasoning was based on a central homeopathic principle: that a substance capable of producing a particular state may, when prepared according to homeopathic methods, also be used as a remedy for that state. In his approach, the person's own tears become the starting material. Why? Because the tear arose from the experience itself. Grief produced the tears. Overwhelm produced the tears. Heartbreak produced the tears. Relief produced the tears. Joy produced the tears. The tear, in this theory, is not merely water leaving the eye. It is a physical expression of an inner experience. Van Oosterum even proposed that only a tiny fraction of a tear be used and then repeatedly diluted and shaken, a distinctly homeopathic process. Whether we accept the homeopathic science behind this is another question. There is not sufficient scientific evidence to establish that a preparation made from tears treats the emotional condition that caused them. But the question Van Oosterum raised is fascinating. What if the body is not simply reacting to our emotional experience? What if the body is also participating in its release? Think about what happens when you finally allow yourself to cry. Something changes. The breath changes. The nervous system changes. The face softens. The body releases tension. And sometimes, after the tears, there is a quietness that wasn't there before. Perhaps the tear isn't the emotion. Perhaps it's the expression of something moving through us. And this brings me to a deeper question: If the body can express an experience through tears... could the tears also be understood as a kind of record of what the body has experienced? Van Oosterum believed they could carry something therapeutically meaningful. I would take the inquiry even further: Perhaps healing doesn't always mean getting rid of what we feel. Perhaps healing sometimes means allowing what has been held within us to finally become fully expressed. The tear doesn't mean we are broken. The tear may simply mean: Something is moving. Something is being felt. Something is being released. Something is being integrated. And perhaps... what we have been trying so hard to hold back is sometimes exactly what is asking to move through. Awakening is not the same as Remembering. The first part is about awakening, becoming aware, seeing beyond what we once believed, recognizing that there is more to who we are than the identity we have carried. But awakening is only the beginning. The second part is about remembering. Some have awakened, but have not yet remembered. Remembering is deeper than knowing. It is the quiet recognition of what has always been within you. Remembering who you are. Remembering your essence. Remembering your connection. Remembering the wisdom that was never truly lost, only forgotten beneath layers of conditioning, experience, and separation. Awakening opens the door. Remembering brings you home.
