All Is Fair in Politics? — Cardinal Onaiyekan's Analysis I have listened to Daniel Bwala. I have also listened to Babajide and a number of others make very uncomplimentary remarks about John Cardinal Onaiyekan. To Bwala, the Cardinal merely spoke for Catholics. Babajide, on the other hand, portrayed the eminent Prince of the Church as partisan. His expectation was that the Cardinal should have suppressed his obvious disquiet over a system that is visibly decaying. He seemed to suggest that the Cardinal ought to have remained neutral—standing neither here nor there, balancing between good and evil, and treating corruption, falsehood, and electoral misconduct with kid gloves simply because he is a priest. Perhaps I should excuse such a misunderstanding of the prophetic tradition. A careful reading of Scripture reveals that the prophets were never spectators in the face of injustice. Consider the courage of Elijah before King Ahab and Jezebel during their reign of oppression. Recall Nathan's fearless confrontation of King David after his grievous sin. Reflect also on John the Baptist, who openly condemned the immoral relationship between King Herod and Herodias. He neither spoke with his tongue in his cheek nor handled the matter delicately. He denounced evil boldly, without fear or favour, and ultimately paid for it with his life. When the President declared that "all is fair in politics," many interpreted it as an expression of political realism. Yet, taken to its logical conclusion, it suggests something far more troubling—that the end justifies the means. If indeed all is fair in politics, then ballot-box snatching becomes permissible. Vote-buying becomes acceptable. Manipulating electoral outcomes becomes excusable. Influencing institutions meant to be impartial becomes legitimate. In essence, every unethical act can be rationalised in the pursuit of political victory. That is precisely why the pulpit must never become silent. The purpose of the pulpit is to proclaim truth, condemn evil, rebuke reckless and dangerous rhetoric, educate the faithful, and uphold the timeless principles of ethics, morality, justice, and human dignity—the very values that politics, at its worst, often seeks to erode. Cardinal Onaiyekan did not criticise the obvious shortcomings of this administration because he wanted to give any political opponent an advantage. Neither did he speak because President Tinubu is a Muslim. Had the President been a Christian and uttered the same words, the Cardinal's response would undoubtedly have been the same. Besides, the Cardinal enjoys the same constitutional rights as every Nigerian citizen. He has the freedom to associate with anyone, to be photographed with anyone, and to vote for whomever he chooses. Those are fundamental rights guaranteed in a democracy. Exercising those rights neither diminishes his priesthood nor compromises his prophetic responsibility. The real question therefore is this: How should any rational and objective person interpret a sitting President's declaration that "all is fair in politics"John Cardinal Onaiyekan simply discerned the implications of that statement and courageously exposed them. He stripped the phrase of its political polish and revealed the dangerous philosophy that could lie beneath it.To John Cardinal Onaiyekan, you spoke in the finest tradition of the prophets—calmly, courageously, and without fear or favour.Let the criticisms continue. They are hardly surprising. A festering wound always cries out when touched. Truth has a way of disturbing those who are comfortable with convenient falsehoods. If Dadiyata was a southerner, his killers would’ve been brought to justice by now, but our people don’t have the media to push for these things or are just unwilling to do so. But trust them to come out en masse when someone’s nudes leak on the timeline.
