The collusive relationship between South African politicians and legacy telecom cartels is utterly destructive for South Africa. Back in 2016, MTN and Vodacom ran to parliament crying that WhatsApp and Facebook must pay them license fees. They desperately wanted to tax innovation simply because their overpriced SMS cash cow had died. Now, they are back at it under a new guise, the Association of Communications and Technology (ACT), demanding that Netflix and YouTube pay for network infrastructure. The tragedy is that South African politicians are deeply embedded in these telecom companies, making them active participants in this madness. Instead of pushing to build better networks and lower data costs for South Africans, these corporate cartels use state regulation to shield their lazy monopolies. They will not innovate. They just want a cut. This is pure, unadulterated rent seeking behavior.

The Fed's dots are ridiculous. A majority of the FOMC now thinks it might have to raise rates to fight oil inflation. They just met, and a lot of them concluded they need to be like Trichet. The projected fed funds range moved up about half a point from March. A serious hawkish shift, and an absurd one given where oil and TIPS break-evens are. That is why the Treasury curve flattened. The front end is pricing a growing chance they actually hike. The flat curve is saying it will not last. Here is the core mistake. The Fed's models see inflation because oil prices went up. But oil is not inflation. Oil can lift the CPI for a few months, and it has. But a relative price shock is not sustained inflation. For oil to become real inflation, the shock has to spread. You need wages chasing prices. Businesses gaining pricing power. Expectations moving. Demand strong enough to absorb higher costs. None of that is happening. Not in the markets, and not in the CPI details. So look at the board. TIPS are falling. The Treasury curve is flattening. Oil spreads are flattening. The IEA is cutting demand. And the Fed's response is to print more hawkish dots, because some officials still think the main risk is inflation. That is the misdiagnosis. The market can see it. The public cannot, because the financial media only reports what the Fed says and does.

Who remembers this set of books? My dad used to have all of them.

In the early 1990s, as a young advocate, I was briefed to represent a client charged with a horrific murder before the Swellendam Circuit Court. He stood accused of raping a young woman in the veld and then crushing her skull with a rock. Circuit Courts are a distinctive feature of South Africa's judicial system. They are, in effect, travelling courts that sit in different towns to hear criminal and civil matters in areas where permanent courts may be difficult to access. In those days, when the judge, prosecutor and defense counsel arrived in town, it almost felt as though the sheriff had ridden in from the Wild West. They possessed a certain theatre. Investigating officers generally ensured that their cases appeared watertight. Acquittals were rare and, before 1995, the death penalty was a commonplace reality. I met with my client on the eve of the trial. He had already confessed before a magistrate, giving a detailed account of the crime. According to the confession, he and the State's principal witness had been drinking together in the veld one afternoon. The witness had passed out beside him when the victim walked by. He confessed that he had grabbed her, dragged her into the veld and committed the terrible acts with which he had been charged. At first glance, it seemed a straightforward case for the gallows. I had a client who wished to plead guilty to a heinous crime. That, in itself, was unusual. Yet something troubled me. My client was a small man, timid and withdrawn. When I later saw the State's principal witness, I began to wonder about the confession. The witness was a large, imposing figure and certainly capable of dragging a woman across the veld. What unsettled me further was that the witness’ statement dovetailed almost too neatly with the confession. It concluded that my client had walked off into the veld shortly before the witness passed out, a detail that struck me as altogether too convenient. The confession, however, posed an enormous obstacle, as confessions so often do. I have little doubt that, during the heyday of apartheid, innocent people were sent to the gallows on the strength of false confessions. Then my client's sister, who had accompanied him, told me something that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Her brother, she said, had given her a very different account. He had passed out while drinking and could not remember exactly what had happened that day. She added that the State's principal witness was on friendly terms with the local police officers investigating the case. The prosecutor was a man of great integrity. I decided to do something I had never attempted before. I suggested that he speak privately with my client and his sister and judge for himself who was more likely to have committed the crime. About half an hour later, the prosecutor emerged from his office, his face a mixture of shock and disbelief. He immediately withdrew the charges against my client and instructed the police to arrest the State's principal witness instead. It was a reminder that even in the most apparently hopeless cases, the duty of counsel is not merely to process the evidence placed before them, nor simply to secure a conviction or an acquittal, but to search relentlessly for the truth. Sometimes justice depends upon the willingness to question what everyone else has already accepted as fact.

This AI just exposed the BIGGEST legal insider trading operation in America. A platform called GovGreed built a seven-layer machine learning system that cross-references every stock trade disclosed by every sitting politician against the bills their committees control, the campaign donations they receive, and the companies their votes directly impact. It scored all 540 politicians currently in Congress. And the numbers are crazy: 56% of every stock purchase made by Congress in the last 16 months was on a stock directly affected by a bill the buyer later voted on. That is 6,170 out of 11,016 total purchases. More than HALF of all congressional stock buys are on companies whose fate that same politician is about to decide. 343 of 540 Congress members actively trade stocks while holding access to nonpublic legislative information. That is 63.8% of the entire legislature making market bets with an informational edge that would put any hedge fund manager in prison. The AI identified 752 active "Triple Signals" in the current Congress. A Triple Signal fires when three conditions line up at once: The politician sits on the committee controlling a bill, they traded stock in a company affected by that bill, AND they received campaign contributions from that same industry. Bills carrying these insider indicators pass at 5.4 TIMES the normal rate. Now look at the individual leaderboard: - Nancy Pelosi's estimated portfolio sits at $194 million with a Greediness score of 98.1 out of 100 - Ro Khanna made 13,231 trades across 800+ different tickers - Michael McCaul made 32,302 trades and filed 6,670 of them late - Thomas Suozzi filed 86.4% of his trades late with an average delay of 396 days, meaning his disclosures landed over a YEAR after he made the trade And then there is Lisa McClain, the fourth-ranking Republican in the House. She has made 1,443 trades in three years, more than 98% of all politicians tracked. She violated the STOCK Act twice in a single year, disclosing up to $900,000 in trades months after the legal deadline. Her husband bought up to $250,000 in Elon Musk's xAI, which quietly converted into SpaceX equity before last Friday's $2 trillion IPO. The penalty for all of this? A $200 fine. The number of Congress members ever prosecuted under the STOCK Act since it passed in 2012? Zero. And the cruelest part is this: A bill to ban congressional stock trading was introduced in January 2026. It has bipartisan support. Over 80% of American voters want it passed. But Congress is sitting on it, because the people who would have to vote yes are the same people making millions from the system staying exactly the way it is. They write the insider trading laws, they exempt themselves from enforcement, they trade on the information those laws generate, and when they get caught, they pay a fine that is basically nothing. The AI didn't discover anything Congress was hiding. It just organized what was already public into a pattern so obvious that nobody can pretend it isn't there anymore.

SpaceX raised only $12B of capital before going public. With that $12B, they revolutionized the rocket industry, built a global satellite network, and created arguably the most innovative company of all time. The federal government spends $12B every 15 hours and still can’t get its shit together. Prior to SpaceX, NASA was sending astronauts into space on Soviet-era Russian Soyuz capsules. So no, I don’t find Elon’s wealth to be a problem, and I wouldn’t trust Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders to allocate a single dollar of it.
