Most people today would see Helen as more evil than Odysseus, but not in the judgment of the medieval Catholic mind. Odysseus is closer to a Judas. Don’t be a “fraudulent counselor”.

It's hard to look at a work of art like this, and then look at what the modern state of statuary looks like, and not believe we lost something profound, both in our beliefs, and in our skill.

Her: She's been here fourteen months. She's older. She's not getting looked at. Me: Why not? Her: She's not a kitten. She just sits in the back and waits. Me: Does she like people? Where does western civilization begin? The Odyssey ironically gives us an insight into this. Not because western civ necessarily starts with Homer but because of the structure of The Odyssey itself. The story has two beginnings. The first beginning of the Odyssey is the middle: Odysseus at Calypso’s island makes his way to the Phaecians where he retells all his adventures he went through to get there including the Cyclops, Circe, the Scylla, the Sirens etc. The second beginning of the Odyssey is the temporal beginning: when Odysseus embarks from Troy and makes for home. The first beginning of Western Civilization is not Ancient Greece, it is Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Monks recording, translating and studying the Ancient Greek works. The tellers of the story are in the “middle”. William of Moerbeke (a 13th-century Dominican friar) is the most prominent Catholic religious figure closely associated with direct Latin translations of Aristotle’s works from Greek; earlier preservation and partial recovery involved monastic copying of Latin (and limited Greek) texts plus other scholars. The Eastern Orthodox are famous for preserving the Greek. Western civilization, like the Odyssey itself, has two beginnings. A Pagan one and a Christian one. The one is the fire, the other the thing that tends that fire and allowed it to give shape to civilization in whose ruins we stand today, wondering if we can recapture any of its splendour.

The two boys, Tucker and Owen saw the raccoon being sucked under by the current, scooped it out of the water, saving it's life. The bottom line that proponents of daylight saving time don’t understand is that there’s only one time of the day that sunlight has a beneficial impact on our circadian rhythm which impacts the risk of obesity, diabetes, and disease, and that is precisely the time of day that daylight saving time takes it away. Because of that this switch would increase the risk of all of those diseases as multiple studies have already shown based on placement within a time zone 👇

A 92-year-old North Carolina man got so bored 2 months into retirement that he applied to work at Chick-fil-A... ...his smile, kindness, and passion for Jesus became so contagious that when he got sick and missed 3 days of work, an ENTIRE TOWN began asking where he was. His name is Gilbert Martin. Everybody calls him "Mr. Gil." Mr. Gil is 92 years old, and works at the Chick-fil-A on Oleander Drive in Wilmington, NC. He spent decades working in the natural gas industry and when he retired, he greeted people at Sam's Club for 12 MORE years, until they eliminated his position. Most people would call that a sign to finally rest, but not Mr. Gil! Two months into retirement, he got bored... so he walked into Chick-fil-A and put in an application. He was 86 years old at the time. He's been there ever since. Not one or two shifts a week either. Monday through Friday. He says the full schedule gives him more chances to be there for people who need him. His official job is dining host. Clean tables. Clean floors. But Mr Gil doesn't see it that way... as he describes it, his real job is: "I get a lot of people that are coming in, just been to the doctor, and got bad news... I'm able to be an encourager; the Lord gave me that." A 92-year-old man who could be resting at home... chooses to stand in a dining room five days a week... so strangers on the worst day of their lives don't have to be alone. And Wilmington noticed. When Mr. Gil caught a cold and missed a couple of days, the owner said he was FLOODED with HUNDREDS of customers who were panicked about him. Mr. Gil has zero plans to retire. He says if you ever see him working, come say hi. "I don't know what 92 is supposed to feel like, but I feel great. Serving others has always brought me joy because I believe that a smile and a kind word can make someone's day a little brighter.” We need more of this in the world!!!!

Permanent Daylight Saving Time isn’t “more daylight.” That’s the sales pitch. The reality is you’re just stealing daylight from the morning and moving it to the evening. In June, it feels great. In January, it’s a different story. Kids wait for school buses in darkness. Millions drive to work before sunrise. Our bodies rely on morning sunlight to regulate circadian rhythms the internal clock that helps control sleep, alertness, hormones, and overall health. Delaying sunrise by another hour in winter works against that natural rhythm. I guess y’all forgot that some people work outside all year long. We’ve already tried this. In 1974, the U.S. switched to year-round Daylight Saving Time during the energy crisis. Public support collapsed after dark winter mornings, especially with children heading to school before sunrise. Within months, Congress reversed course. You don’t create a single extra minute of daylight. You just move it from one end of the day to the other. Winter doesn’t disappear because Congress changes the clock. We still have winter.

July 14,1776.Daniel Boone's teenage daughter Jemima and two companions-Elizabeth (Betsey) and Frances (Fanny) Callaway, daughters of Colonel Richard Callaway-were captured while canoeing on the Kentucky River near the settlement of Boonesborough. A raiding party of five Shawnee and Cherokee warriors, led by the Cherokee chief Hanging Maw, ambushed the girls and forced them to march northward toward Shawnee villages across the Ohio River. Though alarmed settlers quickly realized the girls were missing, the captors moved swiftly, and the girls could only leave subtle trail markers by dropping items and breaking branches before being threatened into stopping. Daniel Boone immediately organized a rescue party and set out in pursuit. After tracking the group for three days, Boone and his men located the captors on the morning of July 17 as they prepared breakfast by a fire. In a swift ambush, the rescuers opened fire, with Jemima recognizing the distinctive sound of her father's rifle. Several warriors were wounded, and the rest fled after one threw a tomahawk toward the girls. The captives emerged unharmed and were safely returned to Boonesborough, where the quick and successful rescue became a celebrated story of frontier courage. Jemima later recalled that the warriors had treated the girls with as much kindness as circumstances permitted, underscoring both the dangers of pioneer life and the complex human dynamics amid the broader conflicts over land and settlement.

In November 2019, I ran into Senator Lindsey Graham in the Capitol Rotunda while I was giving a speech during a demonstration for clean water. Although we stood on opposite sides of the political spectrum at the time, he invited me into his office and made me a cup of coffee. He was a fierce advocate for conservative values, but he never lost his Southern gentility. His passing is a significant loss for the American people. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, staff, and the people of South Carolina.
