Can a 5 gallon bucket change your life? You might be surprised how useful it can be. A lady once sat down in a chair across from me in my office, telling me “I just don’t have any enjoyment in my life!” I went to my closet, pulling out a nice, clean 5 gallon bucket. “I have something fun for you. It could even prove to be profitable. I placed a twenty-dollar bill on my desk. “If you can bring me back even one-gallon of enjoyment in this bucket, I’ll give you this twenty-dollar bill.” She looked at me as though my face had transformed into a horses head. “Are you ready?” I asked. “You can go anywhere you want to. Just meet me back here in one hour.” She was confused. “Well, I guess I don’t know what you mean. How in the world do I put enjoyment in this bucket?” BOOM. Mission accomplished. “You are right” I told her. “Enjoyment isn’t a person, place or thing. It isn’t a noun. It just sounds like one. When we interact with something that sounds like a noun, but isn’t, it can often lead to getting stuck.” See, the fact is, we don’t “have” or possess anything called enjoyment. It’s not something we own. But, at any given moment, I might be ENJOYING something in my life, and while I am, I am engaged in a PROCESS. Every process has a beginning, a middle and an end point. Before the starting point, and after the end point, we are no longer engaged in the process of enjoying something. There’s no such THING as enjoyment. There is, however, the PROCESS of enjoying. Most often, people become hyper-aware of the periods of time during each day that they aren’t enjoying something. They hyper-focus on the absence of the feeling they call “enjoyment” and decide it must have “gotten away from them” or that they’ve “lost” what they once “had”, rather than realizing that they are simply noticing the times of the day where they aren’t enjoying things…which is quite normal. I mean, we aren’t supposed to ALWAYS be enjoying something, are we? No. They make an error, and conclude they don’t HAVE any “enjoyment” in their lives. They’re right. They don’t. It’s not a person, place or thing. You don’t “have” it, or not. You are engaged in the PROCESS of enjoying something, or not. You are enjoying things, except when you aren’t. Just like you are confident, except when you aren’t. The good news? When you can identify where you’ve been thinking and interacting with what you had mistakenly labeled a noun, and track it down to the PROCESS that it actually is, you will be able to get “un-stuck.” This lady who felt she had no enjoyment in her life, and, was therefore LOOKING to “have” enjoyment again, suddenly realized that she could choose to engage in the process of ENJOYING some chosen thing in her life, ANY. TIME. SHE. WANTED. TO. When we are searching for something that doesn’t exist-like enjoyment-we’re never going to find it. However, when we come to the realization that it’s actually the process-of ENJOYING-that brings us so many wonderful experiences in life, we can stop feeling fearful in those periods of time when we are engaged in a DIFFERENT process, feeling OTHER experiences and processes, instead of feeling like we have “lost” all of our “enjoyment” in our life. If you can’t put it in a five gallon bucket, or a dump truck….then it’s not a person, place or thing. Once you’ve established that, it’s a pretty good bet that what you’re talking about…is actually a PROCESS. That’s good news. Read this a few times. It will click. When it does….you find yourself wielding a new emotional and mental super power. Enjoy.
