We recently funded 'Active Community Elders' to run a poetry and creative writing club. They are going to produce their own anthology of poems and we at MAFN, look forward to attending their 'reading events' this summer.
Last year we funded 'Streetholistics' to deliver holistic therapeutic services to ageing residents in the local area. Residents were able to engage in meditation sessions and had the opportunity to learn ways to support medical complaints through diet and holistic practice.
MAFN funded a coffee and computing course that supported local residents to learn basic computing skills. The course was very successful and has now evolved into a weekly event, incorporating crafting and brain games! Great ways to improve cognitive functioning in an ageing brain
Last spring, MAFN funded a 'Friendship Club' for people who had found themselves needing to reach out and communicate to others. Ageing communities become smaller as people move into sheltered housing or 'pass away' so it's vital to stay socially engaged.
In May 2017, MAFN sponsored SASCA, a local service supporting the Somali community to devlop and run a 'friendship group' where elders could come together to share food, drink and socialise.
At a time when, according to news sources, @600 people a day are leaving jobs because of the demands of being a carer, MAFN and services like ours, should have more funding to support services that offer respite to such people whilst improving the health of their loved ones.
In May 2017, MAFN funded the 'Once Upon a Memory' project. A creative piece of work involving care home residents, sharing stories and experiences through their old photo albums.
There are lots of different ways to talk about mental health. And however you do so, talking breaks down barriers. That’s why @ManchesterHCC is supporting #TimetoTalk day on 7 Feb @timetochange
Aquarius Over 50's club was launched in May 2017, with MAFN funding. Since then, they have secured other funding and are still going strong!! We stay in touch with the ladies (a formidable bunch),and it's great to see this exercise group thriving.
Last Spring MAFN funded 'Out and About' a project developed by 'Forever Young' that took local residents with limited mobility on bus trips to places of interest with 1 hour of Manchester. The project ran quarterly trips that included Restaurants and a visit to Port Sunlight!
In March of 2017, MAFN funded 'Old Laundry Drop In', a wonderful project of creative arts for Residents of Meredith and Hopton Court in Hulme. Two 'high-rise' apartment blocks where a large percentage of older people live but, have few opportunities to meet and socialise
In the summer of 2017 MAFN funded 'Our Moss Side' a reminiscence project where residents, past and present where invited to share stories, photos and memorabilia of the area in days gone by.
In the spring of 2017, MAFN funded Sonder Radio, a local digital radio studio, to provide broadcasting workshops for residents of Will Griffiths Court in Moss Side. Residents learned how to develop age friendly related content and, deliver a show to listeners across the city.
In 2017 MAFN funded an adapted lavatory, designed to meet the needs of members of the congregation of New Hope Fellowship Church with limited mobility.
In 2017, we funded the Ayeeyo Lunch Club. The project hosted weekly lunchtime sessions where guests would get together, make friends, reminisce and socialize over regional somalian dishes.
During the summer the board funded a Garden Party in the St George's district of Hulme. Local residents had a wonderful day getting to know each other, over party food and drinks in the summer sunshine!!
