BREAKING: Latest equatorial subsurface anomalies reach 11.1C above average, with the 30 °C isotherm getting slightly deeper and still moving eastward. There is ZERO doubt that this El Niño will be the strongest on the entire planet and possibly even surpassing 1877 intramental

2026 and 1997 are east-based El Niño twins. It's notably warmer across the eastern equatorial Pacific this year, which will drive stronger and longer atmospheric impacts. The cool pools in the West Pacific also have striking similarities — which supports La Niña later in 2027.

Sub-surface ocean temperatures in the Pacific have now reached 9.96°C above average, significantly warmer than the previous record event in 1997. This El Niño continues to set new records. Nobody alive today has witnessed an event of this magnitude.

In the subsurface equatorial Pacific, ocean temperatures recently reached 9.96°C (17.9°F) above average, the largest anomaly of this El Niño event so far and larger than anything observed in 1997. The current record-breaking westerly wind burst could cause an even higher spike.
