China's housing still has its problems of course, but consider the speed and scale of China's urbanization, and how it has to leverage this to develop, which also benefit the majority, this is pretty good.

@CarnegieChina Pacific nations protest but that's really off the point bc it's not a show of force against them. China's ICBM can hit anywhere globally for quite a while. This is about showing 2nd-strike capabilities. Only one country is the intended audience.

The other aspect of China’s desalination technology push that deserves a lot more attention than it gets is minerals extraction from waste byproduct recycling processes. Lots of great circular economy technology projects being worked on in China right now.

China's largest seawater desalination testing facility has completed testing of 1st batch of domestically produced positive-displacement rotor type energy recovery devices. China currently produces > 3mt of fresh water/day via desalination, growing 10-15% per yr. Goal here is

@gonglei89 Sizable amount of grads get into blue-collar jobs and college grads are like what, 30% of youth? Non-grads actually suffered less drop compared to the college grads white collar workers. Less youtube, more kuaishou.

@Brad_Setser In the mean time, invest in your industry and education. Let China in to do JV for tech and know-how. Let China buy the things they wanna buy. Encourage Chinese students and tourists. A variety of this can help, but fundamentally it needs to accept market subordination.

@Brad_Setser It is and China isn't gonna accept it. The solution really lies in the west re-evaluating their market position based on productive efficiency, and gracefully accept their subordination to the Chinese market until they catch up. This is what they have preached in the past too.

New from us: almost 10 GW of coal-fired power is planned in Indonesia to power aluminum refining, despite the fact that solar plus storage can now compete on cost with coal. Many of the aluminum plants are Chinese-owned, flouting Xi's commitment not to build coal power overseas.
