Another Episode in Nigerian Crime History: The Kidnapping and Murder of Hanifa Abubakar On 2 December 2021, Hanifa Abubakar, a five-year-old girl from Kano State, was kidnapped shortly after leaving the Islamic school she attended in Kwanar Dakata. The person responsible was not a stranger. He was Abdulmalik Tanko, the proprietor of Noble Kids Academy, a man her family trusted and someone Hanifa knew well. After abducting her, Abdulmalik took Hanifa to his residence in Tudun Murtala, where he kept her hidden for several days. He later contacted her family and demanded a ransom of ₦6 million, giving them hope that their daughter would be returned safely if the money was paid. As the days passed, Abdulmalik realized that Hanifa could easily identify him. Fearing she would expose him, he decided to kill the little girl. On 18 December 2021, he poisoned her by giving her a drink mixed with a toxic substance. Hanifa died shortly afterward. With the help of Hashim Isyaku, Abdulmalik placed her body in a sack and secretly buried it in a shallow grave within one of his school premises at Kwanar Yan Gana in Kano. Following an intensive investigation by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), Abdulmalik and his accomplices were arrested. During interrogation, Abdulmalik confessed to kidnapping and murdering Hanifa because she recognized him. He also led investigators to the grave where her body had been buried. Her remains were later exhumed and released to her family for burial. The murder of Hanifa Abubakar shocked Nigeria and sparked nationwide outrage under the hashtag #JusticeForHanifa. In response, the Kano State Government revoked the licenses of private schools across the state for a comprehensive review of their operations. On 28 July 2022, a Kano State High Court sentenced Abdulmalik Tanko and Hashim Isyaku to death for their roles in the crime. Hanifa Abubakar was only five years old. Her tragic death remains one of the most heartbreaking child murder cases in Nigeria's recent history, reminding many parents that the greatest danger can sometimes come from those entrusted with the care of their children.
