WHEN THE THREE MUSKETEERS MET EACHOTHER
An American once told me there is a negotiating technique called a “Dutch auction.” That immediately worried me. Whenever the world puts “Dutch” in front of something, there is a reasonable chance my ancestors either invented an ingenious financial system or found a creative way not to pay full price. This time, both seemed possible. In a traditional auction, buyers compete by bidding the price upward. The Dutch became famous for doing something beautifully backwards: start high and let the price fall until somebody finally shouts, effectively: “Fine. I'll take it.” This became particularly associated with Dutch flower and produce auctions, where enormous quantities of perishable goods had to be sold quickly. Auction clocks showed prices dropping until a buyer stopped the clock. The American looked fascinated. “So everyone waits for it to get cheaper?” “Yes.” “But if you wait too long, someone else gets it?” “Exactly.” He smiled. “That is incredibly Dutch.” Unfortunately, I couldn't disagree. Imagine a room full of Dutch merchants watching a price fall. €100. Silence. €90. Absolutely not. €80. Interesting. €70. Several men are now experiencing elevated heart rates but refuse to show weakness. €60. BANG. Someone buys it. Half the room is furious because they were definitely going to press at €59. That little piece of psychology helped make Dutch agricultural auctions extraordinarily efficient. Speed mattered because flowers and vegetables have the inconvenient commercial habit of becoming worthless if everyone spends three days negotiating. And the principle travelled far beyond Dutch markets. “Dutch auction” is now an international term used in economics and finance. I rather like that. The English gave the world the English auction, where people enthusiastically compete to pay more. The Dutch contribution was apparently to sit quietly until things became cheaper. Two great trading nations. Two very different emotional relationships with money. I know which room I'd feel at home in.
