@philthatremains Women make TERRIBLE academic department chairs. Vengeful, hateful, and manipulative. I’ve never had a woman as a Dean. I’d probably just retire early.

I can’t imagine dealing with the behavior nonsense in k-12. I have to deal with some minor disruptions from my college freshmen (loud earbuds, rude comments). In the first week, I make an example out of someone, drop into the stern mom voice, and remind them that I don’t take roll. Yes, attendance of the problem students drops. Good. The students who want to learn keep coming. Their faces light up and they engage. The homework is online, tests in class with dates posted online. The problem students sometimes show up for exams. They usually fail. If they try to pull it together and slink back later in the semester, they usually sit in the back and behave. Everybody notices that they are there, but the room has changed. I forgive but I don’t forget. I try to pull them into the discussion and get them to engage, but any second offense gets a sharper response. Anything egregious? “Class dismissed” and that student is removed for the semester. I can’t even imagine a physical altercation in class. The good students LOVE me. The problem students will do what they can get away with. My department chair and Dean have my back.

Behavior management is a second job inside the teaching job. Every classroom teacher knows it. Now I can put that energy into the one thing I was hired for. Helping a student learn.

@jenteach13 I genuinely don’t know how k-12 teachers make it through the day with that chaos. I teach a lot of college freshmen classes.

@teachthemx3 I love following your posts & looked up Alpha to see if it would be an option. They don’t have any locations near us. Alpha Anywhere online could work, but the contact form just took my info and put us on a waitlist. Individualized AI ed for the masses can’t come fast enough!

@marcportermagee We homeschool, but would have looked at private school if there were any available that are not tied to a church.

@HalfPolymath @grok @hubermanlab I was able to use Build from Grok chat without another subscription or free trial. You might already have access with your blue check.

I just built my first APP!! I spent an hour chatting with @Grok this morning about health problems, fitness challenges, habits, sleep, sunlight and what I have in my home gym. (Reading Protocols by @hubermanlab.) Grok gave me a workout plan and alternatives if one of my health problems interferes with a workout. Then, I noticed something at the bottom about Grok @Build. Might as well try it! I now have a very personalized health & wellness app on my phone screen that reminds me to do all the things suggested in the conversation. It sends notifications to stand and move when I’ve been sitting at my computer too long, track protein intake, get outside for some sunshine, etc and has a checklist for each different workout. It’s built for me, a non-techy middle-aged mom with substantial health problems. Not gym bros. Not the masses. Build suggested a bunch of app features that I wouldn’t have thought of. And, if I do think of a way to make it better (not done with Protocols yet 😉) I can go back to Build and explain what I want to change in the app. If my physical therapist has input, I can add that too. The world is changing. You can just try things.
