“The data shows [sic] that when you take care of people economically, crime goes down” ⬅️ Not the crimes that matter most. This is a common talking point on the far left, but it leaves a lot out. For one thing, the data only support a relationship between economic well-being and certain *property* crimes; and the effects aren’t very large. The most important thing to know about what the data say is that there isn’t any evidence to support the claim that “taking care of people economically” will have any effect on *violent* crimes, which account for the vast majority of people in prison, as well as for the lion’s share of the social costs of crime.
