@sensiblemiddle @Terry22099742 @TeamTalaricoHQ They were public prosecutors. Do you really think they have the resources to go retrial every case that doesn't go their way? The answer is no, they don't. It's an imperfect, resource limited system.

I wondered the same thing so I deep dived. The bounds of the law literally had the prosecution tied. Jury was hung for charging Hoffman with a felony (rape). The child did not want to testify again because it was emotionally difficult. A retrial was considered, but without the childs testimony it was likely to result in a loss and Hoffman would get off with zero admission. So Paxton's office offered a plea deal where Hoffman had to admit he touched the child's genitals (only a misdemeanor, the guy should lose his hand for that but whatever, laws are too soft...). If the plea deal was any harsher, hoffman would say screw off, I'll retrial again where it carried a big upside of getting away with it and the big downside of getting charged with a felony. The odds were in his favor the second time around. So they made a weak plea deal to get Hoffman to at least admit that he's a pedo, which I believe was better than nothing for the child. Did the victim get justice, not nearly enough. But there is a real reason for the very weak plea deal, they lacked the leverage. We should be mad that our citizen jury's are so weak against Pedo's, that should have been a conviction.

China has made it clear they want Taiwan back. What are your thoughts on letting them have it and in the meantime bolstering up the industries we would lose while (advanced chip manufacturing mainly) so that we can greatly reduce the impacts of Taiwan being a part of China? Is it just a slippery slope where they will reach out to the rest of the Pacific? For discussion's sake, assume we actually could on shore what Taiwan produces.

From an outsider looking in, it looked like he was enstating a police surveillance state that could easily be wielded by future governments with bad intentions. Arresting people for saying offensive things online is very dangerous territory because the definition of offensive can be manipulated by future administrations.
