$50 per million output tokens. That was Claude Fable 5: the best model on the market, and the most expensive ever shipped. Three days after launch, a government order pulled it offline. Globally. Overnight. I keep thinking about what happened in between. For one person typing in a chat, $50 per million is irrelevant. For a company running hundreds of agents, it's a different story. Because your agents don't read pricing announcements. They'll happily send the priciest model on the market the same requests they sent yesterday: - log summaries - ticket rewrites - JSON extraction - support tasks - routine workflows Tasks cheaper models handle just as well. Then came the harder lesson. The model everyone had pinned their agents to disappeared overnight, on a decision nobody using it could control. Prices change. Access changes. If your stack depends on one model, that's your single point of failure. One detail most people missed: Anthropic itself ships Fable 5 with routing. Some requests are quietly redirected to Opus 4.8. Even the best model on the market isn't used for everything. That's the whole reason we build the routing layer at Manifest: send each request to the model that fits it, and keep running when a provider goes down, a model becomes unavailable, or a request unexpectedly fails. So the question was never "what's the best model?" It's "which requests actually deserve it, and what happens the day it's gone?"
