This is one of the dumbest things Democrats have done in years. A data center is not some evil AI factory. It is literally the infrastructure behind your tiktok brainrot, email, banking, cloud storage, streaming, hospitals, gov systems, websites, the kiosk that you use to tap, pay and give tip, and basically every piece of modern technology you use. Put simply the INTERNET. We have been building these things since the 1990s. The new ones are more efficient, can build or contract their own power, pay for grid upgrades and use closed loop cooling systems. There are obvious ways to regulate the actual externalities without freezing construction for a year. Instead New York looked at the most important infrastructure buildout of the next decade and said, actually, let’s stop. China and Russia could not design a better propaganda campaign if they tried. Convince Americans that data centers are dangerous, get activists to panic, then let politicians kneecap the country while China builds as fast as it can. AOC says this will help make sure AI is “for all of us.” @AOC how exactly does stopping New York from building AI infrastructure accomplish that? It doesn’t. AI will keep getting built, just somewhere else. You let the buildout happen, then tax the companies, make them fund the grid or require community benefits. You do not stop everything and pretend that somehow democratizes the technology. And the people cheering this have no idea what a data center even is. It is basically like banning the construction of computers because computers use electricity. The capital will not wait. The jobs, tax revenue, power investment and infrastructure will just go to Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio or anywhere else run by adults. This is not protecting New Yorkers. It is making New York poorer, weaker and less relevant.
