I'm going to have to break with NRO on this because I fundamentally disagree with this sentence from the editorial: "...Trump’s unworthy and abusive campaign to investigate and prosecute his political opponents." Trump didn't make these individuals his "political opponents" -- that reverses the causation. The fact that individuals launch misguided and/or illegitimate efforts at a sitting President, or at an individual out of office with an intent to run for office again, does NOT then become provide them with a cloak of immunity from their own potential criminal behavior. To dismiss all the investigations as "retribution" - and declare them illegitimate based on that label -- is de facto immunity they purchased for themselves by going first. The cautionary tale in this is as follows: Do not employ the criminal justice system as a political tool to stymie the implementation of policies you disagree with after losing an election. Political motives should not provide protection from an investigation as to whether your own conduct was, in fact, legal.

That means articulating such questions such as: What is the ontological understanding of the human person that makes rights possible? What institutional structures cultivate the rational and moral agency necessary for a free society? What philosophical foundations make constitutional limits on power intelligible? When the conversation moves to that level, the political warfare accusation frame collapses because the issue is no longer narrative driven and historicist, but whether the civilizational architecture necessary for liberty and ordered freedom is in operation or not. This is why ideological counter-mobilization is strategically ineffective. If the response becomes political tribalism, cultural grievance, or identity defence, it simply mirrors the structure of the attack and intensifies polarization - exactly the outcome destabilization strategies seek. Very much the Hegelian furnace which metabolizes all reactive ‘opposition’ to fuel the furtherance of its agenda. The first-order structural response instead focuses on institutional and intellectual recovery.

Liberty survives only when power is restrained by something prior to will. The American Founding Fathers did not trust ‘virtue’ alone. They embedded distrust of concentrated power into the architecture itself. They did not distrust power because power exists. They distrusted power because volitional human appetite and desire, untethered, will rationalize its own expansion. The Founders’ architecture; separation of powers, enumerated powers, federalism, inalienable rights - was a refusal to let the Ring be wielded unbounded. They didn’t say, “Let us find the wisest person to hold it in an Unbound Executive”. They said; “Let us structure a republic in which no one may safely wield it” - which doesn’t mean outsourcing governance to AI systems (which further concentrates power in the hands of whatever finances and operationalizes the systems programming). Tolkien gives us the clarity of recognition that so much bafflegarb abstract political theory serves to veil; even ‘the wise’ are tempted. Even ‘the good’ would become tyrants through it. The ‘will to do good’ is not sufficient protection against corruption when power is unmoored from metaphysical foundations. That is why renunciation is central. In civic metaphysical terms - liberty survives only when power is restrained by reality prior to will.

“The object is real, the sensation is a constructed illusion.” What’s funny is that this is probably one of the only statements you could make about the whole scenario that is obviously, indisputably false. Whatever else is going on, it ain’t that. Of course the sensation is real. You are having it. What these dopes mean is that the quality of the touch experience doesn’t exist in the object alone but “only” in the mind. But now here is where things get interesting. If sensations that arise in the mind from our contact with things outside us aren’t real in any extra-mental sense—if they don’t describe *anything* about the outside world—what reason do we have to trust the inferences we draw from those sensations, including inferences about electrons, forces, and so on? This is probably the most widespread way that normies interpret pop science and it completely explodes the logic of science itself. It doesn’t just mean you can’t trust your senses. It means you can’t know *anything*. Much more plausible, and constructive, to say that the sensation is the most immediately apparent thing that happens when the mind *interprets* its contact with the outside world. Think of the world as a language and the things in it as words. Think, if you like, of a universe spoken into existence, containing creatures shaped like the speaker and equipped to understand the language. Mental representations are like the syllables and letters of the words—not the things in themselves, it’s true, just as the sounds of words are not their meanings. But our perceptions are imbued with the nature of the things as words are imbued with meaning. Except where words are given meaning by mutual agreement among humans, our experiences are given meaning by a set of relationships hard-coded into us and our surroundings. Only if *something* like this is going on can we confidently go about reasoning with the experiences we have and the rules of logic we find built into us, dealing in abstractions like “force” and “mass”—i.e., among other things, doing science. Basically, just to save you some time: it’s “in the beginning was the Word,” or we’re cooked.

I genuinely don’t think anyone who hasn’t had children in the last 20 years can grasp how much room car seats take up, especially rear facing. And then you have your car seat Karen’s who think you’re a horrible person because they kept their kid rear facing till they were 6 years

Christopher Alexander has an observation about problem solving that I like: you should always be focusing on solving the part that has the fewest degrees of freedom. When figuring out how to design a kitchen, for instance, there are a bunch of subproblems to solve: where to put the stove and the windows and the kitchen table. And which of these have the fewest degrees of freedom? The windows. If you want good light, there is going to be only one wall where you can place the windows, and at best two spots on that wall where the window looks natural. So you put the window there. And now what? The kitchen table, because you want to have that where the good light falls. The stove can wait because that can sit nearly anywhere. If you start by placing the stove, there is a big risk that you block the only good position for one of the other subproblems that have fewer degrees of freedom, and so the whole design will suffer.
