I think the framing of this being a “joint PLAAF/PLAN” drill is too old fashioned now. Since under the theater command construct, all assets under a theater command, regardless of service branches are at the disposal of the operational commander. What is interesting though is that the Liaoning carrier group is under the Northern Theater Command while the tanker is under Central. So there is also coordination between TCs as well.
