Secondary school scholarships to students in Ghana reduced the under-one mortality rate of their children by *half* (With a big standard error, but nonetheless!)
The median married women in India leaves home for 30 minutes per day. On a typical day, 45% of married women don't leave home at all.
Remember: all causal estimates are LATEs, and estimated on convenience samples. Randomized experiments just make it explicit who the average is being taken over.
My worry is this shows how the “credible” revolution has been less helpful than advertised. The methods are surprisingly brittle, use a tiny fraction of variation and are so not robust, and subject to assumptions so we don’t converge on the truth

RCTs can of course also shed light on macro questions! Keynes theorized about the sources of excess labor supply in equilibrium. Breza et al (2021) induced it experimentally Does Paul Rosenstein-Rodan's "Big Push" actually exist? Egger et al (2022) show it does!
A fundamental lesson from my posts these last two weeks on modernization, industrial policy, and development is that development economics should be about understanding why South Korea got rich but Bolivia did not. The current field has largely given up on that question.
