This is another very important phenomenon. It is very much a real scenario and it is not even rare. Let me explain this post also in a Q&A format. Q. What is this condition? • Acute Water Intoxication (Severe Dilutional Hyponatremia). Q. What exactly happened? • Sweating heavily caused him to lose both water and sodium. Chugging 5 liters of plain water severely diluted the remaining sodium in his blood. • To balance this extreme dilution, water rapidly rushed into his body's cells, making them swell. • The problem is Brain cells cannot expand inside the rigid skull. This massive swelling caused crushing pressure (cerebral edema), seizures, and brain herniation. Q. Could he have been saved? • Yes! If rushed to the casualty, we would immediately push Hypertonic Saline (3% NaCl) IV to pull the deadly excess water out of his swollen brain cells. Q.
