imo most of the "why are you mathematicians crying is the point of math to figure out true results or a jobs program for u guys to have pointless fun" is basically meanspirited bullshit from ppl with little to no appreciation for mathematics. this shit isn't even applied to artists, people aren't confused when artists say "i feel bad about ai replacing my ability to make art", they intuitively understand that art is not purely about maximizing the literal production of pretty pictures and it's quite reasonable for people who love it to feel pain about the state of the world as it changes and begins to value them and what they love less. certainly, as with artists, there's perhaps some forms of copes that are false or over-reactions that are disproportionate. certainly, their loss is in several important ways humanities gain. art being insanely abundant is a beautiful thing. solving the depths of mathematical mysteries we might not have gotten to for centuries unaided, likewise. but people are allowed to and deserve to grieve. that a tradeoff might be worth it does not negate the loss. hold some grace for people whos lives and sense of meaning is being thrown into turmoil. it's going to happen to every single one of us. it doesn't make u somehow a better person because perhaps u already feel inoculated to the future shock and welcome it. treating others well makes u a good person. and trust me man, the future shock will come hard enough to fuck u up too given a little more time.
