Here's why i think some people hate light mode. LCD screens made in the last 10 years have finally met or exceeded the brightness level of their CRT cousins. Due to the dim LCD era, user interfaces were built super bright to counter-compensate for a long time. Pure white was represented as a very light grey. These super white interfaces designed for an old LCD turn a modern LCD into flashlight pointed at the user's face. There's too much total light. Let's go back to the CRT past. Very rare to see a pure white interface. You got a lot of light grey with islands of white. The grey and dark portions made the total light output of the UI bearable on a super bright CRT screen. Why do we have darkmode instead of light grey mode? the reason is because it's easy to invert the luminance of an existing pure white design. It's a design shortcut. I would recommend designing for light grey mode. What worked in the CRT era works today.
