After perusing 25,000 comments in the past two days, most of which attempt to explain why Americans are voting for Communists, socialists, and antisemites in record numbers, I’ve done the only rational thing a man in my position can do; I’ve agreed to go on Real Time with Bill Maher this Friday to talk about it. Many years ago, someone from the Dominican Republic shared a story with me. This happened nearly 20 years ago, but the events he described took place during the 1980s. He told me that he came to Puerto Rico illegally by boat. The small wooden boat they used, known in Puerto Rico as a yola, was carrying several passengers, including a number of women. As they were approaching Puerto Rico's west coast—where many of these boats traditionally attempt to land, often near Rincón—the captain suddenly stopped the boat a few miles offshore. He looked at the passengers and said that one of the women had to be thrown overboard. According to the story, the woman was menstruating. The captain allegedly pulled out a firearm and threatened everyone on board, saying that if they did not throw her into the water, he would kill them all. He claimed that her blood could attract sharks, putting everyone else at risk. The man told me that either someone standing next to her or possibly her own husband was forced to push her into the sea. The boat then continued for less than another mile before the captain again threatened the remaining passengers at gunpoint and ordered everyone to jump into the water. They were still about one or two miles from shore. He explained that smugglers sometimes force the men to swim the remaining distance because they can generally swim faster, rather than risk bringing the entire group closer to shore in the boat. He also said that, according to what he witnessed, women were often treated even more harshly, especially if they were menstruating. If this account is true, it reflects the extreme dangers and cruelty that can occur during illegal maritime smuggling operations. Stories like this are heartbreaking and underscore the need to find ways to prevent people from being placed in such life-threatening situations.
