@reubenbond I think the problem is that we fail to program with explicit errors. Try to forget about exceptions and instead embrace ADTs for return types, then RPC vs in-proc vs etc becomes immediately obvious (signature tells the whole story) and unavoidable (must pattern match to proceed).

I believe that JSON serialization is NOT a trivial concern. (Yet, JSON's overwhelming prevalence makes us believe that it is.) So: many times I write JSON serialization code /by hand/ because I want to be **very** clear about formatting decisions.
