When it comes to improving #metabolic health, especially #insulinresistance, I believe there are two validated strategies: low calorie vs. low insulin. This newly-published report (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37545298/) compares the two in a short-term study. Both approaches resulted in improved insulin sensitivity, weight loss, etc. (As an aside, one of my frustrations with studies that use low-calorie diets is that anytime energy is down, insulin will be, too--and it's the insulin-reducing effect of the low-carb diet that results in such improvements.) However, the long-term problem with a low-calorie approach is hard to overlook: hunger. The more you restrict calories, the more hunger grows. The low-carb approach in this study (as it is used in real life) did not require cutting calories--subjects could eat as much as they wanted. My conclusion: to improve insulin resistance, focus first on lowering insulin by cutting carbs. Then, if needed, incorporate reduced calories, but not by focusing on the calories (i.e., low-calorie), but rather structured fasting.
