I'm officially done reading AI-generated code. It's been two weeks since I looked at any of it. I think the IDE is officially on its way to the graveyard. The job is no longer about "writing code," so we need new tools that better reflect this new reality. While reviewing the
@quant_xbt I don't think this is the right take. We probably won't write code by hand anymore, same way we don't do derivatives on paper. But you can't expect people to know how to build software just from vibes. Software engineering is much more than code.
@sattyyouneed Sometimes yeah, but not with the same level of detail we used to. A good set of unit/integration tests gives me enough confidence. I mostly check for structure, and when something comes up that I don’t like, I embed that into my CLAUDE.md so it doesn’t happen again.

Two things it buys you: you can jump into any team’s codebase and understand it instantly (everything looks the same), and any fix you make once benefits every engineer, not just your team.
A word I didn’t know until I joined my current company: canonical. The standard, accepted way of doing things. Sounds boring, but it’s one of the most underrated advantages a big eng org can have.
I really miss the joy/dopamine of completing a programming task by hand. That's been taken from us, so sad tbh. Coding by hand feels almost absurd now, but that's exactly when we hit that magic flow state of deep concentration. Managing multiple agents at once just doesn't get you there.
AI alone is cool. But mastery + creativity + AI hits on a whole different level. Don't let anyone discourage you from pursuing excellence and craft. Keep studying the blade.
Decoupling intelligence from consciousness A concept I first saw in @harari_yuval's incredible Homo Deus book, and it feels very relevant today. These LLMs are basically intelligence without consciousness. And that's exactly what the big labs are selling.

Yeah, those feedback loops are the missing piece. Without a way to perceive the result, the model is coding blind, it can’t tell if it’s doing the job right. It’s stuck taking screenshots one frame at a time, reasoning about a world it can’t actually watch. Maybe not so token-efficient either.
Another reason why vibe coding is so limited. Language is only as powerful as your ability to articulate yourself.
It doesn't make FP languages strictly "better" for AI (models have seen way more Python than Clojure). But it removes a class of error that mutable code invites. In my experience with Clojure, that shows up as noticeably more reliable output.
Pure functions kill that failure mode entirely. No side effects means no hidden state to break.
I really think LLMs benefit more from functional languages like Clojure or Haskell than from imperative ones. I've noticed this firsthand at my job (I work with Clojure), the AI produces surprisingly solid code.
