After several conversations lately about what the next-gen of Africa's tech narrative might look like, one concept I'm circling around is that of "organic optimism." It has a few features: 1. Builders who aren't just reflecting the ambition of other ecosystems to help investors pattern-match. (though some of this is good) 2. Builders who define their conviction around where value is getting dislodged and re-aggregated in Africa by frontier tech: AI, stablecoins, hardware, etc. and their secondary effects. 3. Builders who place their mission in societal as well as economic terms; to be clear-eyed about the socio-political trends they must align with or otherwise contend with. (industrial infra, geopol sensitivity, regulatory frontier, etc.) 4. Builders who leverage legacy industries, networks, and knowledge, without being consumed by their proximity to power and hesitancy for risk. 5. Builders who sell the continent through the excellence of their companies rather than sell their companies through the (outdated) narratives of the continent.

study mechatronics. especially now. because the interesting engineering problems are no longer purely mechanical, electrical, or software. they’re all of them at once. • mechanical engineering → mechanisms, gears, structures, materials, tolerances • electronics → sensors, motors, drivers, power systems, pcbs • embedded systems → microcontrollers, firmware, real-time control, communication buses • control theory → feedback, stability, trajectory tracking, motion • software → interfaces, algorithms, networking, system architecture • robotics → perception, planning, manipulation, autonomy • manufacturing → actually turning the design into something reliable and repeatable then combine them. > design a mechanism in cad. > 3d print it. > add motors and sensors. > design the electronics. > write the firmware. > implement the controller. > make the machine behave. that entire loop is mechatronics. as intelligence moves from screens into machines, engineers who can move freely between code, circuits, and mechanisms become incredibly useful. don’t just learn how to program machines. learn how to build the machine too.
