No clue who that person is. But the poem enraged me. The proof is in the pudding: “My own poetry is a failure,” a quasi-clever way of disarming the critic before he has drawn breath. Pure nonsense; also the oldest trick in the trade: confess the crime early and nobody can accuse you of concealing it. How can one say she’s a failure if she said it first? Trickery, quackery and fakery under the veneer of a strophe. Then comes “I do not want to be a person,” a sentence dripping with hypocrisy, which tries too hard to sound weighty until one goes looking for the weight. Nowhere to be seen. “I want to be unbearable” is the poet bowing to the gallery, and the gallery is the Devil’s; flattery of that costs nothing and buys the ticket to Stockholm. “Lover to lover, the greenness of love,” Hallmark slop I have found on greeting cards with more poignancy, and after it the greenness goes the way of all fruit that ripens too quickly, and rots in hell where poor poetry deserves to live in infamy. Paul Neil Milne Johnstone is not the worst poet in the universe any more, and yet that hoity-toity minstrelsy, worthy of Middle Ages charlatans, has won her author a Nobel. “Cool, cooling” is two words agreeing with each other and with nobody else. “Earth bears no such plant” is a grand pronouncement about botany, offered without a single leaf as evidence. And “Drink all the sex there is. Still die” is a high-society woman announcing that all is vanity and calling it fatalism, in a coat borrowed from better men. The poem is one or two good moves dressed in clichés by clichés. It is better to stick with Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, a 1970 book by Tom Wolfe. This critique is a failure.

No, this isn't the new Taylor Swift album cover. I've cleaned-up this remarkable colour photo, taken 113 years ago in August 1913, a year before the First World War. It is a portrait of 16-year-old Christina Bevan at Durdle Door in Lulworth, Dorset. It was taken by Lt-Colonel Mervyn O’Gorman using an early colour glass-plate process and isn't colourised. This was one of the first Autochromes I cleaned up for Twitter and I share it again with you because it is such a beautiful image 😍
