The official PISA presentation yesterday had a specific segment on Scotland and England. It exposed how selective the BBC was when comparing both nations. Scotland's strengths were omitted from all BBC coverage. The BBC only focused on areas England performed better.

Glasgow deserves better than periodic ritual condemnation. If I hadn’t spent real time in Glasgow; walking those streets at 3am feeling safer than in most European cities; I might have swallowed the latest BBC framing wholesale. But I have been there. I’ve seen the city at night, felt its pulse, and known its people. So when pieces like this reduce Glasgow to drugs, violence and racism, it lands as something more than journalism. It feels like a selective, recurring campaign that shows little regard for the community it claims to examine. Every city has problems that demand honest attention and real solutions. Pretending otherwise helps no one. Glasgow is no exception. But painting an entire city and its people through the darkest lens available, while treating occasional disorder as defining character, is not balance. It is disregard. Glaswegians have long punched above their weight. The “People Make Glasgow” ethos is not empty branding; it is lived reality. Problems exist and should be confronted without denial. But reducing a complex, resilient city to a weekly dossier of its worst moments, while soft-pedalling the everyday dignity, creativity and solidarity of its people, is not serious analysis. This is far more serious than folk realise. Scots pay for the BBC. It's meant to be our national broadcaster. But there's growing evidence the BBC tried to implicitly sabotage the Glasgow Commonwealth Games by ensuring no free live coverage and a negative pre-Games narrative. This goes beyond political bias. It hits at the heart of the role of the BBC in Scotland and the justification for the TV licence. The Glasgow Games, like any similar national event, reflected Scottish national pride in itself and how we engage with the international community. The vast majority of Scots, many children from low income households, were denied a lifetime memory experience. The BBC found money to broadcast the Bundesliga live. It's found money to pay for the Birmingham European Athletics Championship. Yet its bid for the Glasgow Games was so low it's been described as derisory and one Games' organisers could not seriously entertain. This was a slap in the face for all Scots. Not just those who support independence. The BBC has never been Scottish. It's a London controlled broadcaster. However, it's also never been considered anti-Scottish. That changed with the 2026 Glasgow Games.
Why is the BBC refusing to reveal how much it bid for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games? Why the secrecy? Some reports put the figure at £1m, which is a tenth of what the BBC paid for the Birmingham Games. If true then the BBC entered a bid designed to fail. This is implicit
