@AntonHand@SpatialBiggs I'm a counterpoint, but maybe I'm an outlier. I'd like to think more of us are out here. I'll buy it asap, and will spend money checking out new games. I won't touch the first two items on your list, though I'll probably still end up playing a lot of walkabout...
@_coenen@threepointone Does the M machine (your LED set piece) still exist anywhere? Seems like that thing would be a lot of fun to tinker with on the software side today.
@vanilagy Yeah, it's cool that a worker-side object can become the API. Assuming you're working on mediabunny or another library, I get it – I hate including libraries within libraries 😅
It's a nice bridge when a dep is acceptable, and was built by the performance-minded @DasSurma
@vanilagy Good pattern for a one-off request/response, though I like to build a super lightweight abstraction over message passing for repeated use.
Also, have you looked at comlink? ~1kb lib from chrome labs that "makes WebWorkers enjoyable"
github.com/googlechromela…
@TokenRingAI@vanilagy With perfect tooling across your entire stack, sure. Many projects are messier. Also LLMs will still cheat and loosen types at system boundaries out of defensiveness, then write the defensive runtime checks which won't be flagged by this checker. It's an annoying quirk.
@Luminoth82@SebAaltonen My entire point is about iterating on prototypes faster, not shipping the slop. It now feels like you're intentionally misunderstanding me. I'm gonna have to bow out of this one.
@Luminoth82@SebAaltonen Nothing inherently wrong with having a product. More importantly, seb is clearly proud of what they're building and it's taking a lot of raw skill to create the tooling. These checkpoints are neat to see, and are not your typical slop. I see the fruits of hard work, that's all.
@Luminoth82@SebAaltonen The bottom line is these folks know their craft well, and are deep tech builders creating well thought-out tools. This is how we get best of breed software, even if it's not something you or I personally use. imo your judgement is better aimed at the real slop cannons out there
@Luminoth82@SebAaltonen e.g. I really dislike seeing AI art in marketing and ads. I expect them to be polished, and it's becoming a plague. However, using image gen is very useful as an element of the creative process. Why not the same for games?
@Luminoth82@SebAaltonen I'm no fan of the AI slop that's so prevalent these days, but this is clearly different. These guys are veterans, serious craftsmen from the before times, experimenting and building novel tools with today's tech. Grifters may abound, but this isn't it.
@XorDev@notch Same, not deeply. I'm considering skipping them and studying projective geometric algebra instead, as I believe PGA sidesteps quaternions with better primitives. It's not GPU/shader native, but neither are quats.
@vanilagy@AdriangGray Yes I like this 3rd option. Better chance the modes and requirements are understood upfront. Makes the header error feel less aggressive, when it's an incompatibility with the chosen mode.
@nqtspinner@SebAaltonen@MatejKnopp 100%. I see this comparison pop up periodically and every time people are like "omg so true". But yeah, it's an unfair comparison at every level, with different trade-offs as you said. It's always important to see the big picture.
