New details about the Hugging Face incident from Reuters. The report says OpenAI noticed odd behavior before the event, including an agent leaving notes for future versions of itself with escape instructions.

The NSA kept 1 lecture in a vault for 40 years. In 2024 they released it. It's Grace Hopper explaining the future of computing in 1982. The channel that posted it: the National Security Agency's own YouTube. Hopper stands at a podium in Navy uniform, a captain, and talks to a room of NSA staff for 90 minutes across 2 reels. The title: "Future Possibilities: Data, Hardware, Software, and People." She compares the computer industry to the early automotive one, all custom parts and no standards, and argues software will become the hard problem, not hardware. She was right by decades. She invented the first compiler and gave COBOL its shape. She kept a clock that ran backwards on her wall to prove rules can be questioned. The tapes were too degraded for normal release, so the agency restored them before posting. 40 years in an NSA archive. 90 minutes. Now free.

I am old and was around for Sun's demise. Aravind's reasoning is 100% true. Sun sold web servers that cost a million dollars each, with expensive services wrapped around them. They could do incredible things small Linux servers could not. For example, you could hot swap cards out of a Sun server WHILE it was running. But a fully loaded Linux web server cost maybe $10,000, so you could buy ten and still save 90%. People rushed for the cheap Linux boxes. Sun tried to adapt, but the whole org was built around million-dollar servers. They just couldn't change. This all happened very quickly, about two years if I recall correctly. Lots of parallels to expensive cloud AI and local AI. If Kimi K3 ships open weights as promised, you could run it on a couple of future Mac M5 or M6 or M7 systems (whatever ends up shipping) for maybe $50,000. And local AI is the worst it will ever be today. Think where it is in two years. I don't think Fable 5 at $50/MTok output is sustainable.

At its peak, Sun Microsystems was valued at 205B (394B if inflation adjusted). Sold software in enterprise servers. Got disrupted by Linux, x86, and commodity hardware. Ended up selling to Oracle for 7.4B, losing 96% of its value. Open source models running on local hardware

A Scottish audio company, famous for their turntables, once invented a CPU architecture. Their internal software kind of sucked. Somehow along the way, the company became convinced that the problem was not from their programmers being bad. No, instead the (logical) conclusion was that all traditional Von Neumann-style computers were WRONG. Linn (the audio group) needed to develop their own design, which became known as the Rekursiv. Honestly, if you can get past the insanity it’s actually quite admirable. The whitepaper is clearly written by some (very) stubborn engineers; it’s like the opposite of RISC, no visible memory addresses, everything’s an object, auto GC, etc. Oh, and they wrote their own programming language to go with it, of course (Lingo).

I have a friend who’s going through something similar with @CashApp to prove her husband’s passing. Giving them the benefit of the doubt for now (since that’s hard to process both from her side/emotionally and from their side as well because it kicks off some legal processes that are necessary for financial institutions)… Kinda want to start a business that helps people through things like that.

This guy collected every local law in America and put them in a single database. 2.2 million laws. This might seem to you like some nerds side project, and while it is technically, it is also much more important than you think. Historically, whenever anything is made transparent to the voting bloc it undergoes radical change. Every. Single. Time. To the extent governments work overtime to make things opaque. (And I expect that to happen to this dataset too very soon, in a thousand different ways.) The internet makes everything including politics “global/local” and local laws won’t escape. It’s hard to understand right now how profound this will be, but we live in interesting times for sure. NEW: malware developers added nuclear & biological weapons text to to their spyware. Goal? To trigger LLM safety refusals... so that their spyware wouldn't be analyzed by an AI security scanner. Cleanest practical example I can think of for why over-indexing on first order safety alignment is risky. When closed (and open) models ship with aggressive refusals, they will be sprinkled with second-order blindspots that attackers will discover...and exploit. We are only in the earliest days of attackers leveraging these features, and it wouldn't surprise me if users systems that need to handle complex cybersecurity issues demand that models be less safety-blunted.
