If they want to know genetic parentage for their medical info or to understand their origins, that's what DNA tests are for. There's no need to put it on official government documents.

That's private. The only thing the law needs to know is legal parentage...

If a baby is born while the couple is married, the husband IS the legal father, automatically. That can be changed w/proof that...

That's their purpose: to prove the legal relationship btw parents & child. Usually the biological parents are also the child's legal parents, but not always.

Usually biological & legal parents are the same people, but not always.

@DrunkenSailorB @HannahBerrelli As you correctly note, a birth cert is a LEGAL document. It's not a scientific document. It's not DNA test results. It's a legal document that sets forth the facts of the child's legal relationships to its parents. Legal parenthood isn't the same thing as genetic parenthood.

@DrunkenSailorB @HannahBerrelli A few things legal parents provide kids that legal guardians can't provide: - Inheritance of parent's citizenship - Automatic inheritance of parent's property if parent dies - Legal relationships to all the parent's relatives (so the kid has grandparents, aunts/uncles etc.)

And that legal parents & legal guardians are also 2 different things? Legal guardians have fewer rights & responsibilities re the child & provide fewer protections.

They have always been an accurate record of who the child's LEGAL parents are, & a fairly accurate but not always reliable record of who the child's GENETIC parents are. & they CAN'T be that w/out DNA-testing every newborn baby & its parents.

@ThePosieParker @HannahBerrelli What lie? Birth certs are an accurate record of who the child's LEGAL parents are. They've *never been* a strictly accurate record of who the child's GENETIC parents are. That wasn't even possible - we've only been able to prove parentage by DNA for about 20 yrs.

@Annietamfloiot @warmsox @Hanifkureishi It must be different where you are. My mom spent quite a lot of time in US hospitals (literally years) and most patient-room doors were open most of the time. They closed them only on patient request or when doing a procedure, giving a bed bath etc.
