More than 80% of businesses fail: One of the key reasons is setting wrong priorities. Many businesses tend to concentrate on the wrong things. At the expense of their success. So what has to be done to avoid wrong prioritization? There is a great model that can help: McKinsey Three Horizons. It is a strategic framework designed to help organizations manage growth and innovation. Introduced in the late 1990s, it categorizes business activities into three distinct horizons. Each horizon represents varying levels of risk, investment, and timeframes for growth: Horizon 1: Core Business Focuses on maintaining and optimizing the current core business. Typically covering a short-term period of 6 months to 3 years. The goal is to defend existing market positions and enhance current offerings. Horizon 2: Emerging Opportunities Involves exploring and investing in new business opportunities. These opportunities should have the potential to become significant revenue generators over 2 to 5 years. Requires a balance of investment and risk management. Horizon 3: Long-Term Goals Looks 5 to 12 years into the future, focusing on developing entirely new business opportunities and ventures. Involves high levels of uncertainty and innovation. But how to allocate resources over those horizons? 70/20/10 rule is often applied: 70% of resources dedicated to Horizon 1, 20% to Horizon 2, and 10% to Horizon 3. Due to significant technological advancements, the timeframes might be shorter nowadays. But the overall message of the model still remains relevant.
